I suppose an ideal scenario would be many helpers, particularly two men positioned laterally ,with lines to the masthead as the mast goes down or up to keep the mast central.
It still would be nice to have some sort of triangulation to keep the mast moving in the desired lateral plane . As mentioned, the deck base of say a two temporary struts either side, would still need to be in line with the tabernacle pivot point, and I'm not quite sure how they would be connected to the mast to be able to freely pivot .
I have constructed a telescopic mast crutch that will be much better than a ladder . Also, the forestay luff grove seemed to have a life of it's own and some method of control is needed.
