I am on the lookout for a slug replacer

Yantlet - long time Kiwi based brit who has been following my journey for four years

- he actually turned up on the hammerhead at brightlingsea and came for a sail with me -

suggets that a good way of getting a boat is to ask around as lots of the good ones never come on the market

so. Practical denizens of boat yards, do you know of any unloved Liberty's or Mintrels moldering in boat yards or unloved on moorings

the location would be very helpful

a phone number for the boat yard proprietor would be great

a phone number for the owner would be brilliant

the boat will go to a goood home and be well used, it will see all sort of interesting things

As far as I know there are three Minstrels on the market at the moment - 2 around £9K and one at £4.5K without a trailer. I think one of the 9K ones is my old boat and I'm sorely tempted to buy her back! Just need to find £9K.

As there were only 30 built they always seem to command around that price.

I'm not aware of any old Liberties about - there is one in good condition around £8K but there are stories of one or two of these that have required rescuing in the past so your plea may get a response.

Worth joining the HLMOA for a tenner and post a "wanted" in their classified section.

nope

Have you thought this through Dylan?
You prefer bilge keels and inboard engines. Liberty/Minstrels don't do either.

inboards - I would prefer one - but without the bills - financially they frighten me to death

diesels in small boats are a terrible liability - too small a space to fix much

the unhappiest moments of my journey have been spent looking down that frigging hatch at the next thing the engine has thrown at me

so it is an outboard in a well that I am aiming for so that I can carry a spare and get the darned things fixed

Liberty has bilge keels - and a drop keel

keep up at the back lads

I have

Have you considered a Hurley 22 Dylan?

Bilge keels - Outboard in a well - Active owners association - Great seaboat

Countdown to Seajet and the Anderson 22 commencing NOW!

I have considered it

no separate heads and the outboard is the wrong side of the rudder

when I took the slug through wells bar the jet of water from the inboard onto the rudder blade gives a tremendous confidence that when you turn the rudder the boat turns

it allowed me to turn into the breakers and then make progres between wave crests

wells bar - aaaagh!

as for the Hurley - I loved the way it sailed

a complete delight - a real sailors boat

- but with the outboard on it motored like a pig in syrup

Hi Dylan, it was your other post on Libertys that got me looking in here again after disappearing in a disillusioned huff several months ago.

I love the little blighters, and rate them highly. Not that I've ever sailed one, but...

They fairly often come up for £4-5K. And not always as wrecks, though there are some horrors. It is definately worth contacting the HLMOA folk if you haven't already- I found them enthusiastic and helpful, answering questions when I was looking into them. More the fool I for not getting one rather than a cheaper (ahem) "project", albeit a pretty one. Besides the one sailed junk Chris mentions, there's also a junk ketch out there, but I think the original rig's nice.

I think I've heard of extra skegs being added to one or 2, but may be my imagination.

And like the Slug, a small boat with separate heads compartment.

And canoe sterns look good.

But as long as the others are giving other suggestions, my other little old love, the rarer "poor man's Liberty" (just made that up, ok), the Poacher 6.4! 2 for sale at moment- 1 at Tony Hole, Devon for £2K and one at Andy Seedhouse in Woodbridge for £1500! More like a cross between a Liberty and an E though.

All the best, Jem.

This one was advertised for £4995 (now gone I think)- http://www.swalebrokerage.co.uk/boat_min_detail_print.php?bid=107&bcat=1

More like bilge runners. Don't actually hold the keel up above the bottom.

You may like to adopt this as your standard.

Dylan's initial concern with anything less than a bilge keeler was that the boat could sit on rocks or an anchor or whatever, as he travels in unknown waters.

There is a westerly next to my boat, located in Essex, which needs a little TLC. I've looked at it and for the money its a lot of boat. Looks to be all there you'll just need to spend a bit of time cleaning everything. Do bear in mind that when I pruchased mine I knocked just over 30% of the asking price, so I bet, a pound to a penny, you'd get a great value boat. Worth a day trip and a haggle if nothing else.
When I get disheartened with working on the boat I take a wander over the marshes and the RSPB reserve 10 mins away....

There was an article in PBO some years ago about a guy who dried out at the entrance to the Havengore Bridge. He realised he was very lucky as he had just missed some metal stakes. The advice which should be followed is never to dry out where you have not seen the bottom beforehand.
