Years on from the UK adopting the SI units of measure - I find it amazing how mixed up the situation is.
For example in MBM the new boats are listed in mixed units
size - feet & inches
weight - tonnes
engines - hp
performance - knots (is a knot an SI unit?)

Most marinas charge per meter
Boats are modelled by the feet size ie. Sealine F43 or Phantom 43.

I met a local builder and surveyor in our Village Hall today - the builder measured in ft and inches and the surveyor asked "whats that in new money"

why cus thats the way most of us like it (me included)
So isnt about time we dropped feet and inches and made the leap.

Nah we cant do that. Ferinstance. If things are small, imeasure in mm, if it's a bit bigger say 3inches then its FT Inches.. Now if I'm measuring a door ferinstance it's ft in. Yet if it's depth, then metres. Now my tank holds 150 gallon, but they put it in in ltres. So have to convert it back to 1.3 miles to gallon ish. Then when mixing two stroke, it's fluid ounces or some other things that I have never heard of.

I cant see any govt risking losing votes or for that matter spending the money to change from miles to km on the road so, given that, we really ought to know about feet and inches. I think its quite healthy to have a mixed measuring system. It means we can talk to the Euros as well as the Americans

I agree Canboria - These youngsters think 100 pence is the same as a pound but as far as I'm concerned it's still 8/4d

By the way what happened to "rods, poles, and perches"?

I was one of the lucky ones who was half-way through school when thay changed to decimal money. About the same time they started teaching metric measurements. I already knew about pounds and ounces, feet and inches, pints and gallons, etc but was young enough not to have trouble with the metric stuff. Nowadays they don't teach kids about proper measurements, only metric, but I've never seen a eighteen year-old go into the pub and ask for .5 of a litre of lager, nor have I heard his girlfriend say that she's going on a diet to lose a kilogram or two before her holiday. The imperial measurement system is as much a part of British life as fish and chips, the pub, being crap at sports, etc, etc. Whatever Phoney Tony decides to do, I don't think you'll see the end of them for a very long time.

Of course we should make the change now!

If it's inevitable, whats the point in waiting (dare I say the Euro too)

On the other hand we could go back to the good old days...

How about calculating the wages of a few hundred staff with various amounts of overtime at £11 . 14s . 9d" per hour ?

But lets go further, anyone fancy a "six and three quarter pint" Porche?

I spent much of my childhood chanting tables of obscure units. Remember poles, perches, furlongs, gills, drams, hundredweights, fathings, quarters and so on ? No one in their right mind would prefer that mess to the metric system - would they?
