Can any one remember awhile ago, someone by the name of Richard Cranium, posted urging people to sign his petition to allow boat owners to fly the union 'jack'? well I have just looked at the Downing street petition and many people have supported Richard's quest. 4 other Pillocks. So does that mean we will all be allowed to fly the union Flag now? Will I go and buy one yet? Where shall I fly it? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Dick Head indeed. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I fly the Union Jack every time I sail, it is surrounded on two sides by a very nice red background. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Wow - 4 people agree.

Maybe we have to set up a petition - don't allow us to fly the Union Flag (unless we are an HMS ofc) - we want to keep the red permanently . ( or defaced red, blue, defaced blue, white ...)

Afloat the wearing of the Union Flag on the jackstaff denotes a ship of the Royal Navy, and it is not allowed to be worn by any other ships.
...and it is flown at the peak (or at the yardarm if there is no gaff) to denote that a Court Martial is being held.

From the Admiralty Manual of Seamanship Vol 1 (1951)
I don't think things have changed.

I've just read "sell up and sail" (Pardey's) and its interesting that in the book he makes reference to a blue ensign being the most junior colour and for that reason he flies/wears the blue. His view is White = RN, Red = Merchantmen, Blue = everybody else. That'll improve the humour of all members of warranted "Blue" clubs I expect!

But the seniority is wrong. Back in the 1660s the RN was organised into three squadrons, each having an admiral. The seniority ran Red, White, Blue. It was only after Trafalgar that the navy adopted the white, in honour of Nelson who was Vice-admiral of the White. The merchant navy adopted the red, and the blue was relegated to the reserve.
