Uniden Polaris

Don't forget these are VHF sets made for the USA ONLY - and therefore DO NOT comply with the curent EU and UK regs; they WILL NOT be CE or Wheelmarked, if they have a DSC function, it is an outdated US only version; in theory CANNOT be sold into the UK or EU market or the seller(retail outfit) could be prosecuted(but never seems to happen........).
They are cheap, go to the Wet Marine website(www.westmarine.com) in the US and you can read all about them and compare features of all the sets.
However you can buy them from ebay.co.uk at a good price and there is a legal loophole whereby the seller can't be prosecuted(or so I understand).

I am visiting the EU on a round the world sailing venture, does that mean I cannot use the dsc on my USA radio, all I thought I needed to do was change my set over to International chanels and it would work OK I have used the DSC in the uk to call Liverpool coastguard and all seemed OK with them ( I checked with them first that it was OK to check the set.)

have seen radios, uniden is a major maker of good 'cb' radios here and would expect the same would be true for the marine radios, and have several uniden cb radios now.
