Hi,

I have been looking for a waterproof handheld VHF and have come across one of these - a Uniden Atlantis - for sale on Ebay. The seller has 8 or 9 of them for sale it looks look as though they are imported from the US. Uniden have a good reputation - but, being new to sailing, I am not sure if this is a "UK legal" handset or will do the job that's required. The Ebay blurb is below. Does anybody know this model or is able to vouch for it's OK - ness!?

Regards,

MhvoiceUK

The Atlantis is "water resistant", rather than waterproof. Might still be OK for your intended use. It's unlikely to be CE marked, so it's technically illegal in UK, but it will still work fine. It has a NiMH battery, which avoids the "memory effect" which plagued NiCd batteries, but battery life is only rated at 8 hours. It's quite a big radio too. The Atlantis sells in US for about $100. Don't know how much it is on eBay, because I can't find it listed! There are better handhelds around - probably worth paying a little more.

voice,
there are some remarkably detailed posts on the subject in the past weeks. Can I suggest you go to the 'Search' button at top left of page. Type 'vhf CE' into the search words box, then select 'all forums' and 'and' and ' all posts'

You'll find enough material there to keep you occupied for many hours, and when you have read it all, feel free to ask any further questions you may have.

Some of the mailorder chandlers are clearing out xm handhelds at bargain prices. Between £80-£100 .

I have had one for years and no problems .The battery is still working OK and it comes with a battery holder that enables it to run on AA type batteries.

Only splashproof but you can allways buy a waterproof bag for it.

company hat and legal stuff aside, Uniden sell no marine radio in the UK.
You will find it hard to get service and spares.
Also radio's will not have M1 and M2 you will have problems getting them programmed in over here.

If you not in a hurry for a set it may be worth waiting till January for the Boat Show.
Will be plenty of good offers around then I am sure :0)

Regards

CE mark...

The CE mark means it's been approved by our respected authorities for use in Europe. Equipment without the CE mark, even if it's as good or even better, is technically illegal for us to install - even though a visiting boat with the same equipment can use it perfectly satisfactorily and legally.

Re: CE mark...

It is also illegal to offer non CE maked goods for retail sale. Second Hand gear is different but I wouldn't want to get caught with the dodgy stuff in my posession. I'd leave it well alone.

Re: CE mark...

Thanks for all of your responses. I took heed and have bought a Standard Horizon HX260E waterproof handheld from a UK supplier (£149.00 inc spare dry cell battery case). Couldn't wait 'til London boat show (more's the pity).

Now I have to pass the exam next Sunday....
