rustclips.jpg

......this pic shows two worm drive clips which were the only fastening of rubber hose to skin fitting for water intakes of two sea toilets. Both were below the waterline.
On handling the clips they both crumbled away and it was, therefore, only the friction of hose on pipe that maintained the seal.
The boat. which is about 15 years old, has, to the best of my knowledge, been maintained by 'professionals' rather than the owners themselves and has been surveyed probably three or four times during its lifetime.
1. Who the hell regards mild steel clips as acceptable in this situation?
2. Shouldnt surveyors have drawn urgent attention to the problem?
3. Shouldnt 'pro' maintainers have picked up on this?
4. Have you ckecked yours recently?

Wouldn't it be a good idea if MoBoMonthly were to carry out a practical survey of boat repair/maintenance companies like the car service thing they do on telly....you know, stick some faults on the boat and see how many service engineers notice/find them?

I think that most Chanderies sell mild steel stuff - the SS is often on a separate rack - like it is the "special" option.
Shouldnt SS be the default ?

Having said that I've got a load of worm drive clips in my tool box - most are MS and when I need one I have once or twice put a mild steel one on with the plan to get a SS one and replace it - did I always - err I hope so /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif - now I should go out and buy a load of SS ones specially for the "boat Toolbox" - --- another job ......

When I saw the "Unforgiveable" title, I thought the post was going to be about someone misjudging the height of a bridge. Now that WOULD be unforgiveable.

Good to see the old "Scar" boy back again Hi Coli now was it me who misjudged the height of a bridge once? Least I stopped in time

Pedantic point

I've edited a couple of posts here. Nothing sinister...simply changed 'jubilee' to worm drive as the company that own the Jubilee trade mark very very picky about its misuse (along with Thermos and Rolls Royce, two other companies that regularly give editorial teams a right royal thrashing).

If the clips are 'Jubilee' then fair enough but otherwise can we keep it generic?

I thought it, you typed it. Don't mention mild steel tanks whatever you do.....opps, just did!

Surveyors again eh!!

Back to my previous post on whether I go after the surveyor of my boat. This sort of shabby nonsense is, as you rightly say, unforgivable.

Come on Kim - get Hugo and his team to "out" the rubbish surveyors in the boat world.

Re: Boatless of cambridge.............

How can you be in between boats Coli when theres such a fine vessel for sale at Brundall, of which you have prior knowledge. Just reduced too.

Re: Surveyors again eh!!

I think you might find that stainless "worm drive clips" are only "reccomended" I've seen lots of boats with zinc plated clips, but I admit not normally on seacocks, where they might be subjected to bilge water. Also were there two hoses with one clip on each, or as should be, two clips on one hose? I wouldn't use anything but stainless on my boat, but be carteful, some stainless clips have mild steel worm drives!!

Now we can have some really interesting threads for me to contribute to like:

' Virtual (ly) not buying a boat.'
' Guide to Mediterranean marinas - a land-based perspective' and
' Ancient [delete]mariners[/delete],,,,,, coins of the realm'

Seriously many welcomes back. Those who know what they are on about have missed you...(and me too!)
