I want to buy something for emergencies. For example if the shaft seal was to fail and start letting in water.
I know that there are products out there but just can't remember or find them. What is the best "putty" to plug up or at least contain a leak of that size?

Thanks.

Firstly you wouldn't want to put epoxy putty on a shaft seal, it would set like steel on the shaft.

We carry epoxy putty sticks available at all good chandlers. Star Bright make them, others too.

Ok. What would you do mid ocean? Is there a better alternative? My thinking was who cares about loosing your ability to motor when the boat is sinking!

It does have a shelf life by the way. I have a tube with the middle still soft but the outside gone hard. Two or three years old and kept in the cool.

I found two types for £1 each in the pound shop in Chingford - bought two and tried one out to test- works very well
One is a the normal roll where you cut a lump off and nead it to mix the components, the other is a packet of smaller pea sized pellets for individual jobs

I have completely removed my stuffing box and the rubber hose that attaches it to the stern tube, on the water.

Why?
