Undertstanding weather charts

What I'm looking for is a guide to understanding and interpreting the more exotic weather forecasting charts available now on the web from models such as GFS...not just the typical met office synoptic chart with fronts, which I'm very familiar with. Anyone know of a good web source of such education, or even a book? Something aimed at sailors would be good.

That said, I once spent a couple of days with some climatologists. Their take on forecasting was so completely out of touch with my comprehension that I didn't know what to think: eg, surface pressure phenomena are driven by choke and acceleration points in the jetstream, not surface pressure phenomena cause the jetstream to develop, change, decline, etc. Mind-blowing stuff...
