Under cockpit beds .....

OK here is strange question .....

Where do you prefer to sleep on your boat ?

I know various that will not use the under cockpit bed ... finding the height above the bed restrictive .... also many who prefer the fore-cabin ....

I like the older infil double bunk in the saloon ..... now sadly out of fashion ...

It would be interesting to see if the builders have it right nowadays .........

I have a single and a double berth midships , the double being optional with the leaf of the saloon table folding down and an infill put in place. Both have lee cloths and I can sleep in eith er quite happily. I only sleep in the forecabin if the sea state is calm and the engine is on as it's the quietest berth. I have slept in aft cabins but don't like them as you can hear the noise and footsteps from the cockpit and it spoils my much needed beauty sleep. On older designed boats , the pilot berth usually behind the chart table makes an excellent sea berth.

When I'm with the lass .... its the saloon table infil job ....comfortable and easier for .....

When without her and on own or with crew ... its forecabin singles ... as I find it quieter, and can't be bothered to lower the table !!

Under-cockpit jobs..... one boat I crewed - then owner used the forecabin and offered me this .. where he normally threw his gear !! I asked why he didn't use it .... seems he had same problem ! Noise, footsteps across cockpit when people going back to THEIR boats etc. etc. and of course the age-old slap - slap of water under the counter !!

I declined and bunked down on the saloon settee berth !!

for the last 12 years I've cruised alone on my engineless boat
so I didn't have your noise and privacy problems.
(this may be - thankfully? - about to change)

I NEVER sleep in the vee-berth, use it for storage.

underway it's always the lee-berth ,
in the tropics often the lee cockpit bench

unless it is wild anywhere : then the cabin floor.

During deliveries,
as the skipper
I always slept in the pilot berths,
- closest to the action.

I have a quarterberth - nice and wide but holds me in if rolling. Close to the companionway and induces blissful sleep!

HUH ? Properly trained boaty people always cross other peoples boats in front of the mast (iow deck), not behind (iow cockpit).

I always use the pilot berth underneath the chart table, nice 'n cosy, very stable.

Well, it all depends!

If we are in a sheltered anchorage, or a marina, and SWMBO is on board, then the main saloon with the infill is without a doubt the most comfortable option. If we are anchored in an area that is not quite so sheltered, then I grab the quarterberth (RHIP!!) and SWMBO has the single in the main cabin with leecloth in place.

Out of preference, I would always take the quarterberth...far more comfortable!!

I agree that foredeck is better and accepted ... but it happens !!

Only a small cat could fit

under our cockpit, and she would not want to do so because it is right behind the engine!

Best berth = the nice big pilot berth that I built for myself when I was single....can't remember when I last slept in it!
