After all those posts about colregs.Just had a phone call from Duncan. He's on his boat, and 10 minutes ago, just 75 yds from his berth, a dinghy was sailing across.

Duncan was aware, and watching, and slowed down from 3knt, to stationary, with a touch of reverse so he was still in the water. Helm of dinghy had seen Duncan, and was going to pass safely ahead of Duncan's bows......until the instructor's head popped out behind the dinghy sail, saw Duncan, grabbed the helm from the student (who had been doing fine until this point), and crash tacked.....straight at Duncan's boat.

Duncan only had time to turn his head to see if he had space behind to reverse when the dinghy hit,(he's stationary remember) and proceeded to bounce all the way down the side of his boat, before sailing merrily off with not a word!

He didn't say, but I don't think so. He was still rather bemused by the whole incident when I spoke to him

Doing the cross forum thing.

Thought I'd read what you guys chat about!

Regards what happened to your frined - Thats pretty pants that a dinghy would do that! Seems to reflect more on the instructor than the poor student!

As has been said on this forum many a time, you cant legislate for plonkers. on the other hand, if it was the first time he had seen the mobo, he may have paniced and not realised that the mobo was stopped. under those circumstances, a bump down the side is preferable to being run over, but the instructor should have been keeping a better look out. Complain to their sailing club!
