UK\'s Toughest Jobs - Boatbuilders, 9pm Discovery Channel Tonight

If you find yourself becalmed tonight, might be worth a look.

"The three hopeful trainees will spend two weeks together in a Norfolk boatyard as they learn the dirty and challenging trade of boat building."

Is using them any dirtier ?

This is a yard about the size of a container. the famous yard was about 100 yds down river in manor rd. It is just an office. opposite a pub called the tide end cottage.

Thanks for that - I've just watched it.

It's hardly the toughest job in the UK, is it? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

An interesting exercise in people-watching, though. I've got sympathy and hope for Antonia - I'd employ her, and she deserved a job for the way she just did what she was told, and did it well. I've got sympathy for Chris, but I wouldn't employ him - he's too volatile. I think he's done the right thing by ditching his G/F, and I think the owner has gone out on a limb by taking him on - I think it's 50:50 whether Chris stays on the straight & narrow, realises the chance he's been given & becomes the most loyal employee ever, or gets into a fight, gets the sack and is back to square 1. It is a callous thing to say, but if there's a queue of people, why take the risk?

I reserve my bile for Brook, who came across as a nasty, dangerous tw@t. Now way would I ever employ him. He came across as a complete waster, who's lucky to have a G/F to keep a roof over his head. I'm sure if he'd got the job, he would have turned it down. You just know he's going to be trouble!

You did want seroius responses, didn't you ?? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Get real, these people were probably wished onto the yard owner. And he having signed a contract goes along with it rather than lose the money.
It's TV not real life.

Ah. I can spread a little light on this.
I complained bitterly to some TV company about the lack of background in these exposé-docu-business-soaps. Was it Tiger Productions?
They told me that they don't pay the victims (I don't think that's the word they used)
Not sure I believe that. Unless these people think that no publicity is bad publicity, and there is some evidence to back that up. (who would have thought that Jade Goody could make millions?)

Would hardy call it tough work more like you tend to at the whim of the owner of what ever boat you are working on (the boat Ive been working on the owner wants to moth ball her again after hearing how much the bronze floor will cost him not realising that every week he delays it will cost more in yard fees)

Hello Andy. I wonder if you have any experience as a TV extra? Legitimately curious about this.
