Only a fraction of the 2,696 boarded by the force's 12-man cutter crews in the 19 months to last November were searched.
Ohh, bugger, that sort of hysterical nonsense is not very helpful is it? It's just the sort of crap that pessurises MP's into a knee jerk reaction like supporting the Govt's useless e-borders concept.
Great, that means that they want UKBA to tear apart every family cruiser they stop on a picnic to the beach. That'll increase the intelligence they get from supportive local yotties (NOT!)
I guess fear & panic sells papers, but it sure as heck doesn't help anything useful does it?

I would echo that.
First create the fear then Government is able to step and and control us a bit more. All under the guise of "protecting us" singing the "what have you got to hide" mantra.
Maybe step up licensing and alongside it a bit of taxation (just to cover the costs you understand).
Being realistic, it is very easy to enter the UK on a pleasure vessel.
If this route lets in unwanted/terrorists/etc, then why not try to close it?

Very true. I know of three cases in recent months where the boys in black have raided
arriving yachts & taken away illegals in Gosport alone.
Hmmm.
A cynic might suggest that this is simply an example of the government using the phone-hacking affair to blackmail the press into publishing official propaganda.
I'm just relating it to many trips/deliveries I've done back into UK - just so easy (it seems) to be completely anonomous.
Total hysterical BS to me; and knocking 'rich boat owners' probably appeals to Sun readers.
In reality I'd think it quite tricky to smuggle people in; most of us here would raise an eyebrow if we saw a boatload of 'ethnics' trooping ashore either in a marina or from a tender.
It would also require quite a large boat, and they tend to attract attention re. drug smuggling already.
Years ago my boat had a total loss battery system, no on-board charging, so we only put nav lights on when anything came close; one night we were unlit off Plymouth trundling along the coast a few miles off, when an equally unlit Lynx helicopter ( distinctive sound ) came and hovered right over us, obviously checking us out via Night Vision Goggles, presumably we'd been detected by radar, probably shore based.
After that I've always thought the coast is rather better guarded than is generally let on; the UK is very good at keeping stuff like that secret.

So, its Saturday/Sunday pm in a Solent Marina/Poole/Weymouth & a 40' yacht comes into a visitors berth. The crew of (lets say 8) moor up & walk up the pontoons & head for town.
Unless its midwinter, how many would notice that they might be illegals?
Obviously, if they are not wearing Musto/Henri Lloyds with Dubarrys and shades on their heads they are suspicious and should be reported instantly to the authorities.
