What's the big picture here? Yes, we know there is no end in sight, but why all the rain this year? I've heard that a) the jet stream has moved south (and this is bringing in all the lows)...but why has it moved south? When is it gong back north?...b) it's all to do with La Nina (opposite of El Nino)...but that's in the southern ocean. Any good meteorologists amongst us that can explain what's going on, and how long it's likely to go on for?

It's man made global warming. Where have you been for the last year?

Anyway, don't worry as the government will beat MMGW by taxing us all more. We just have to be patient, pay the extra taxes, and GW will soon be a distant memory.

Sorted.

No, it is due to Sin. We have all done sin and are being denied summer because of of it. I just wasn't aware I had done quite that much sin this year. Not a whole summer's worth. Usually my sin results in a bad week out of four.

I put it down to a. 24 hour drinking, more hot air is being expelled for longer periods and b. the smoking ban in public places, more hor air is now being expelled outside.

I'll get my coat...

Yeah, Yeah...what about some serious answers...or do I have to go to the PBO Forum /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

A La Nina event is basically colder than usual water in the Eastern pacific. This pulls the polar jetstream further South over the continental US, which means it's starting from a more Southerly position over the Atlantic, so Atlantic depressions, which track the jet stream, are routed over England rather than heading up over the top of Scotland.

so it's not true that it is designed to make the smoking ban even more enjoyable for non smokers, watching smokers getting drenched in their 50% covered shelters /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I wouldn't mind if that were true but as far as I am concerned I am not getting enough sin either..... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I was in South of France last weekend and they were having a lovely time. So it is definitely a conspiracy against us alone.
I suspect the Russians.

I ain't done no sins and I quite like it actually. No such thing as bad weather only bad clothes. My apologies and sympathy to anyone up to their a*se in floodwater though.

Thank you! Now I also read that the cool La Nina can also last up to 12 months...so it'll be July 2008 before we get any sun /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

This a weather reversion to normal British summer maritime weather, with a south westerley airstream bringing a long series of weather fronts. Pray that the wind comes from the east or south east and we might have a summer.
If not, then it is a normal summer as per 60s,70s,80s etc

Remember in 1976 we had a drought, and they appointed Dennis Howell as "Minister for rain". We had similar summers to this for the following 8 years

You want a serious answer no one really knows.

There is speculation that global warming is causing more extremes of weather then some clever clogs gets up and proves that in year X similar or worse conditions existed.

You ultimately pick the answer you like best.

I attended a weather course by Simon Jenkins (who posts on here) and can thoroughly recommend it. I am interested in seeing his book when it is published as he firmly believes sea temperatures affect our weather more than is currently acknowledged.

Put simply if the Azores highs do not form strong enough (these need cold water in mid atlantic while this yrear it has been warmer) to push the lows into tracking further North then the UK lives under a series of lows and the accompanying fronts that gives crap weather. While not as bad it was similar in 2004 with a series of lows giving gale after gale as we sailed to Spain & back.

Now does that help more than getting rid of the GB's?

Just make the most of it. I've had a F6 almost every time I've been sailing this year and it's been great. Often with sunshine too.

I reckon we are building too many wind farms and this is having an adverse effect on the worlds air currents by diverting them and slowing them down. Just a theory but an interesting one none the less.

My dear old Mum, God rest her soul, reckoned it was all them darn satellites changing the weather. Mind you she said that when it was too hot, too cold, too dry, too wet, too foggy and anything other that perfect and it was never like that when she was a girl.

All that said I was looking at a web site the other week (sorry forgot the URL) where it plotted, in real time I think, all them darn satellites up there now and quite frankly it looked like the M25 on a bad day - no room for swinging moorings in space and I bet MDL have bagged all the best bits for inter-stellar marinas /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I agree with the sea temperature bit. We had a miserable summer here in Australia with unusual fresh winds. Right now its winter and the sea temperature is down to 15 degrees C in close and about 16 degrees along the shelf. The weather has been colder than it has for the last 30 years, fresh westerlies and plenty of rain. Normal winter species of fish have showed up and it is looking like a normal season coming up. The last few winters have been mild with the sea temperatures remaining warm right threw the winter.

When the bow and arrow was invented, there was a bad summer. Its all these new fangled bows and arrows our ancestors cried. Their scientists and wise men studied the matter long and hard, and decided the speed of an arrow in flight was upsetting the delicate balance of nature.

A few thousand years later, a chinaman discovered that certain chemicals mixed together went off with a most satisfying bang. They soon discovered that stuffed down a tube with a sealed end, it would throw hard things much further and faster and more destructively than bows and arrows. So the gun was born.

The summer that year was exceptionally bad.

Its all these explosions our ancestors cried. Its upsetting the weather pattern, and shaking the clouds to make them rain more.

At that point somebody knocked some King off his Horse with a cannonball. The weather next year was appaling. Its all these cannon balls tearing holes in the atmosphere, and knocking Gods annointed about cried our ancestors.

Around the turn of the 18th Century, the French got a bit too big for their boots, and started invading people all over the place. Messrs Nelson, Hood, Hornblower, Aubrey and some others uprooted all the ancient forests of our green Island to build ships. The weather was appaling. Its all these trees being cut down, its letting the wind blow too hard, cried our ancestors.

About 120 years ago, there was a horrendous explosion in the Pacific, as Krakatoa blew up - creating what is claimed to be the loudest bang in the hsitory of mankind.

It poured with rain, and there were floods in many parts of the Country. Its all these volcanoes blowing up, cried our ancestors.

Not long after, someone discovered how to make those useful bangs push a piston up and down, and the car was born. Unfortunately the fumes were dreadful. It absolutely poured with rain that summer. Its all these cars......

PS: Long range forecast from the BBC in 1962: 'Summer this year will occur at aproximately 2.35pm on tuesday July 21st.'

Is there really anything new about a wet British Summer?
