Although it's sad news the pilot warns that many entrances on the west coast of Portugal shouldn't be entered in strong W/NW winds because of large breaking waves. When the marinas are up rivers this can be exacerbated by strong outflow caused by heavy rain inland in addition to tide effects. Given that one person managed to swim ashore they obviously weren't standing off.
This has been on Scuttlebutt for the last couple of days; seems they were trying to enter harbour, which was officially closed due to the conditions; maybe they had another emergency requiring the attempt, only the survivor can say.
