UK heatwave shuts part of Leeds & Liverpool canal

In summer '76, Thames Water, then managing the river, pumped water from the tideway over Teddington weir into the Teddington & Kingston reach and again up over Molesey weir into that reach. Needless to say, the pumps were sold off years ago.

Meanwhile in the brewing industry, we couldn't produce enough of a new beer called 'lager' to satisfy demand. Prior to that time, 'lager' was marketed mostly at women.
