Just finished reading another circumnav book. This particular chap did it on/in a 30' sailboat with 10hp.

It'll probably be five or more years before I get my shot at it, and I'll sure as hell be taking more than ten horses with me. The plan is to buy a Targa 31, or a 35 with a fly.

Having attempted it I am a bit doubtful about achieving an average like that in a boat that size.
But maybe Dylan can shed some light on his averages and we could pro-rata for the boat length.

What are you suggesting? Four point thingumy knots is a rather fast speed for a 30' sail boat?

It would be reasonable if the wind was always on the beam or behind them & impossible if it was always heading them. It has to be a moving average & must include tide assisted motoring. But they will have spent many days waiting for good weather & fair tides I guess.

They don't, it will almost certainly have had refuelling stops & they are probably not included in the "time taken".
according to the report they did have 400 gallons on board =. Were they not in bladder tanks ?

"Setting out from Lymington at 3:00am on Thursday 11 August, Mike Deacon together with his son David, blasted Hot Lemon across the start line at 54 knots with 400 gallons of diesel on board. "

Goodness, 400 gals plus 2 adults must be close to 2 tons - 54kts with a 2ton payload is quite impressive.
