Sorry Drascombe Coaster but you go in as well...

There're not ugly......but what about the Buccaneer, about
20ft long, produced in the mid 70's in GRP, centre cockpit with a poop deck. There used to be only in Poole back in the 80's and was tested by either YM or PBO at the time.

Can't find a pic KP, just comes up with modern Buccaneer fishing boats!

I know the ones he means. They're certainly eccentric-looking, but to me they're so unusual they've gone through ugly and come out the other side. I'll try to find a picture.

EDIT: Here you go. He had the name a bit wrong, hence your lack of search success. It's actually called the Buckler:

All these boats have the same quality, in that they are all small, and the designer has introduced curves to give them character and ended up making them just odd, or sentimentally cute. In order to justify this thread it would be necessary to find a small boat with adequate accommodation that could be described as beautiful, or at least good-looking.
I am not sure that I can think of one, though the Sonata and small Firsts look neat enough.

It's not only small boats these where just some of the ones that came to mind although putting a cabin on a previously 21' open boat is always going to be tricky if it has low top sides i.e. Drascombe Coaster. There are plenty of ugly 21 -22' plastic horrors out there but some pretty craft as well. The Silhouette for instance (what were they, 17' maybe), Golant Gaffer and stretching up a bit the Folkboat...

It's not so much about size as tasteful, attractive, cohesive design.

My boat is the same size as the Buckler, has surprised other forumites with the adequacy of her accomodation, and is flat-out beautiful :D

I would say that wasn't very pretty due to the ugly cabin top. It reminds me a bit of the Crabber26 which people on here and journalists implied and said was ugly due to it's long raised cabin roof. I recognised what was being said but didn't think it was that bad but having got used to the Yawl & Crabber 24's lines, looking at the 26 now plus it's big back side I agree! Neither the Flicka or 26 are that bad though, lets face it, it's really picking holes compared to some monstrosities.

Will put pic up of a 26 when Photobucket has sorted itself...

I'm a Buckler Ketch fan.

They're based on the English race galleons that beat the Armada.

The 1976 Practical Boat Owner article mentions an intrepid couple who were setting out from Gosport to Bahrain in theirs.

The designer was called Bob Mayo and I have tried to find out more about him, but without success.

Have you asked on here on a seperate thread. I did the same for the guy that designed the Folksong and we eventually managed to contact him through his son ;)

The Buccaneer is, indeed, a strange looking vessel. The double row of windows is really bizarre.
For many years it was, to me, the epitome of the ugly boat. Then today I've been shown the Buckler. Yech! It takes the cake.
The Flicka 20 is, to me, a functional looking craft and, therefore, attractive. Flickas have completed some terrific voyages, a really seaworthy little ship.

I actually like the Privateer - and even the Buckler!

The Newbridge virgo voyager!

and the Prout Catamaran (from the 70's) that was moulded in several shades of dog sh#t brown ........that used to be moored locally. Fortunately I never saw the interior
