forgive me for starting a new thread

but on this forum we have a Dutchman who has been using udder cream as antifouling

"In the Netherlands udder salve/cream cost about 10 euro for a 0,75 kg jar and I use less than one jar per year. For applying it we use a paintbrush (or bare hands) and a paint roller.

After the sailing season we clean the boat with a pressure washer (10 minutes of work) and at the start of the season it's about 1 hour of work to apply new udder salve."

I used to milk cows and it is amazing stuff - astonishingly water repellent

but it is hard to beleive that it would work

so, who is going to give it a go?

Dylan

A fellow Dutch Crabber owner uses Udder Cream.

"I used udderointment (uierzalf as we say in dutch) That worked pefectly! Just apply it with your hands, they become soft as well. I bought it at a farmsupplyer. No growth what so ever. When I bought it, they asked me what kind and when I said it was for my boat they instantly knew what I needed, its quit common to use it as antifoul".

He puts it on his aluminum prop! They are usually Lanolin based...

Udder cream is basically Savlon (cetrimide and chlorhexidine gluconate) in a greasy carrier.

Here is an extract from the Safety Date for Cetrimide.

So it is yet another DIY chemical that is highly inappropriate and even illegal to use as an antifouling because of the damage it can do , not only to weed and slime, but also crustaceans and fish.

On your own conscience....

In its own agricultural context, udder wipes are excellent for a quick clean of paws after handling any stock, cleaning feet, etc

Domestically they beat Tesco hand wipes by far for value. £13 or so for a 1000 in a handy bucket.

I thought that was the point of antifouling - if it wasn't harmful the blighters would stick on the hull?

So do zinc & caster oil cream, chilli powder and regular pressure washing

Doubtful it kills barnies but it does make it very difficult to attach to the under water bits.

Whats wrong with that??:D

Can you add some more information to back up that part of the sentence please ?

There is extensive evidence that cetrimide is an inhibitor to growth in shellfish:-

If you could find a material which prevented marine bacteria and then weeds and shellfish adhereing to hulls, without killing them, then you would be a very very rich person.
