U-Joint and Gimbal Bearing Lubricant

Are you just looking for grease, or is this some special lubricant?

Pete

special lubricant made from angel tears that have been aged for an eternity and encased in solid platinum... or at least the price suggests that's the case.

just don't want to wait for snail mail so looking to buy over the counter when next in Southampton

It doesn't have to be a special marine grease; the gimbal and UJ bearings shouldn't come into contact with water. Use an EP wheel bearing grease, something like Castrol LM etc , available in any Motor factor or Halfords etc.

Why buy Mercruiser or Volvo Penta ( Yanmar, Yamaha, Vetus etc) stuff at a premium when you don't have to ?

is there an alternative of the same quality then? that won't cause an issues with say, insurance claims, if something goes pop within the drive prematurely?

There may be but we dont know the spec of the "correct" grease.
It is only one of several lubricants specified for different parts of the drive assembly.

A quote regarding greasing the gimbal and UJ bearings from the Volvo Penta official manual for the 1999 " WT" model year drives:

"Use OMC EP/ Wheel bearing grease or equivalent".

It doesn't appear that ambiguous. Mercruiser will use the same Gimbal bearing and UJs suppliers as VP so the same spec of grease. Still, feel free to pay more for Quicksilver grease if you want to !

Castrol LM is an EP/wheel bearing grease, as are many others on the market. I doubt that OMC made their own EP wheel bearing grease or the other greases specified .
