My brother has just driven over to Portland. Apparently two yachts are adrift and grounded in Portland Harbour on the eastern side of Chesil Beach. Judging from the wind direction, they may have come from the Sailing Academy area. Hopefully, as the bottom shelves very gently here there may be little damage.

There was a recent post expressing concern about the proposed very short length of rising chain which was going to be fitted to moorings in this area. The current weather conditions demonstrate why this is a bad idea. You can get a nasty short chop in the Harbour in easterly winds.

Total of yachts aground in Portland yesterday reached four. Five went adrift in Falmouth and were collected by the Coastguard and RNLI.

Yachts moorings were from Castle Cove area and the poorly maintained moorings are always caught out with the first Strong easterly of the season.
