I think it is possible and will do some tests on the generator mounted on the engine but before I do so has any one done this before eg

1st question
2 tachometers wired in parallel from the two terminals on the generator.

2nd question

Do the tachometers have to be similar ,in type and manufacturer ?

Cant find any literature on both transducer and gauge design ( calibrated galvanometer or electronic digital gismo ) ?

You need to give more info.... Is the tacho connected to the alternator (you mention a generator) if so, it is measuring the raw frequency of the AC generated, and any other tacho placed in parallel would have to be the same type. If your existing tacho is connected to a transducer pulsing at engine speed, the new one needs to be of the same type. If it's a petrol engine then you're probably measuring spark frequency and need a tacho rated for the same number of plugs. IE, GET ONE THE SAME AS THE ORIGINAL!

Tacho is connected by a two core cable to a small transducer which screws on to a connection directly in line with the cam shaft .It is not connected to any alternator Engine is a Mercedes OM636 diesel

Not sure of what the out put type is ie pulse or voltage hence intent to measure when I get back to boat next week
