..and two-strokes have not been banned - provided they can meet the emissions standards, which very few of the smaller ones can.

Neil

And ITYWF the same emission standards apply to all petrol engines. Inboard as well as outboard and 4 stroke as well as 2 stroke.

There is a separate set of standards for diesel engines.

OK My apologies - that will teach me to read the advert properly!

I had been looking at a series of two strokes and obviously had my mind set on one thing!

I guess we are aware that two stroke OB's have been banned from sale in EU for a few years now (except to commercial vessels.) I have seen a few for sale but with 'only to commercial users' on the advert.

Any comments on this one or is there a catch?

And yes, I am in the market for a 9.8hp two stroke...

36Kg is pretty light for nearly 10HP. Twin cylinders as well - hmm nice and quiet :D. I have a 6HP twin Yamaha 4 stroke which ways the same - lovely quiet engine and light enough to chuck in the boot to take home :)

I think the law is that existing stocks of 2 strokes can be sold legally, but import of engines not meeting emissions regs is illegal.

As the OP engine is a 4t anyway it doesnt matter, but it would not be illegal to sell an unused new pre2007 2T

Should not think there are many left now!

This is hearesay, but when I was buying bits for my elderly Mercury I was told by the dealer I could buy a new one... there is a wharehouse in Belgium half full of new 2-strokes imported before 2007.
It wouldn't be difficult to test, but my Merc just won't die.

Mainbrayce have the Tohatsu 3.5 and 10hp,2 stroke. I just checked out of interest,no connection. (except that I rate Tohatsu 2 strokes as being light and reliable, and I love Alderney!) cheers Jerry.

I bought my Tohatsu 3.5 there in 2004, not to avoid the emissions legislation, which did not exist then, but saved a good bit of VAT. It has been an excellent purchase.

Last year I bought a small Mercury two-stroke on Ebay, just like new, only been in fresh water six times, very reasonable price. They come up from time to time.

Yes and they can get any other hp you may want as well :) I love Alderney too. I might just have to accidentally forget my current heavy 4s OB when I go over next year and be forced to buy one - only for use over there of course ;)
