I was doing some passage planning on the iPad and noticed the Navionics app had been updated. It now has real time currents and water heights as standard, makes navigating a bit easier - rather than leaving the app and going to the Tides Planner app.

The second one is pretty cool. It has a photo icon, when you take a photo it places a small icon at that location, click on it and it opens the photo. Useful for transits, river entrances etc and as an electronic record to look back on.

Can you explain a little more what you mean by "real time currents and water heights"? Even the first version allowed you to find the height at a tidal diamond by pressing and holding the cursor on it. The updated version you scroll the cross to the diamond then press "i". Has it changed again?..

Thanks,
Nick

Hi Nick, the currents are now displayed as arrows of direction with a coloured filling that increases with the current speed, blue for flood, red for ebb I think. Clicking on the arrow brings up detailed information and allows you to move the slider forward in time. The main benefit if that the actual current arrows are on the chart not via interrogation of the diamond. The water height feature is a series of rectangles at key points like port entry and show the actual height of water - from predictions not sensors I suspect.

Looks like I'll have to upgrade again... :) hopefully as I've upgraded within the last 12 months it will be free this time!
Double hopefully I won't need to update iOS again to get it to work!!!

Many thanks,
Nick.

It was done automatically on my version, I have the iPad set to auto update apps and I hadn't noticed it had been updated until I next opened it so it's not a paid for update. My version is about 3 years old and comes with the free chart updates for life - or until they stop doing them, so far so good.

Mine too. Uk and Holland HD for ipad. Currents always been in there, but now nicely displayed on the chart. Just a graphic rather than the number of the flow.

One thing I find particularly irritating about the Navionics app on an iPad is that, when viewing a chart in landscape mode if one taps on any item for further info that info is only displayed in portrait mode! Or have I not got the settings right?

One of the differences between Ipad and Android versions of Navionics app. Just completed a delivery trip and we were using both Ipad and Samsung android version. The Ipad had more features - tides as described earlier, the route numbers can be moved around by putting the cursor on them and moving around. Neither of these were on the Android version, but the Ipad route numbers and arrow were HUGE compared with the android version which was a much nicer size. Both worked well however and we didn't get lost or hit any hard bits! (We did have charts and a Raymarine plotter which we did not use as the tablets were so much better! - in my opinion).

In general settings change the "use slide switch" setting to lock rather than mute. You can then lock the pad in landscape mode.

The chart rotates beautifully, it's just the info screens, start up screen and menus that are fixed in portrait mode and will not rotate.

Maybe Europe HD and UK versions are different. I have been taking photos around Greece in this way for the past three seasons.

Just noticed that if you zoom in (in my case where the marker to the right was at 249 ft) then the tidal rate is displayed on the relevant arrow.
