Here's a clue - it's not many miles North of this

Holy Isle Arran from the south and Ailsa craig also from the south showing Gannet colony.

That's 'cos it's pretty, and the sun always shines from an azure sky.

If the piccy had included a little more east it could have included another 3 lighthouses on the wee Cumbrae - a place well known to Yachtmaster shore-based candidates as one of the islands transposed into La Manche to add interest to an otherwise boring chart.

I will go with a yes and a no to that /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Right, and bonus points for the gannet colony. My crew told me that the UK has more gannets than anywhere else in the world (and most of them seem to live on Ailsa Craig)

Scotland has TWO Ailsa Craigs, the other is here on the East side:

The cloud of white dots over and around the rock are actually gannets! This is an old picture as it shows grass on the top, its all solid gannets now.

and check this out:

The cams are great, we keep our boat there - at North Berwick, and I can check the sea state before leaving home 20 miles away.

Actually I think the Bass Rock is more picturesque than Ailsa, and the more vertical sides are better for Gannet watching.
and I just never tire of watching Gannets

Last time I saw that was in September for the Largs two handed race. In fact we didn't see that scene because it was teeming with rain... Dad and I agreed it was a pretty unpleasant sail. Pounded upwind in the rain, only to round Holy Isle and for the wind to shift right round to the north...
