Hey all
On my 4hp Johnson 1996 outboard there are 2 extra holes next to the tell tale hole. When the engine is running they spit water out of them. Does anyone know what they are?
The right circle is the tell tale.

Ahh ok that would explain it. I see them sputtering water and just wonder what there for.
Thanks
I am puzzled by those extra holes
( I'm actually surprised that there is telltale. Earlier 4 hp models did not have a telltale. An obvious improvement made on later ones)

I take they really are holes that are supposed to be there ?

Are they the exhaust back pressure ports which are normally on the back of the leg?. Is there also some exhaust gas being blown out?
Perhaps the pivot bearing cover, which older models did not have, covers their old position.
It would be some of the water which has passed through the engine cooling system and out via the head as Richard suggests but most would go down the leg and exit via the main exhaust outlet above the prop

That's my engine number. Pretty sure it's not a deluxe. As for exhaust gas coming out I would say there possibly is as in the video the water does splitter out. If you put your finger over it you cant really feel it though

The De luxe model has a totally different leg and gearcase with reverse gear .. The number would have a "D" after the "R". Maybe also an "H" if it did not have an integral fuel tank.
( all the letters in the model number code mean something)
