Two Dutch Boats on the Deben Shingle Saturday

Saturday Afternoon at high tide two Dutch boats attempted to enter the Deben from Orford Direction via the quick route .. Both had to be pulled off by the Ferry .. George at Ramsholt said that the sailing club rib had to be used to get a line onboard so each could be pulled off .. From the sea it looks like a time saving route .. We watched a MOBO go out that way last week .. One local boat found only 1.5m over the bar last week and wondered how deep it actually is .. Anything with EAST in it in a good blow is horrible .. We have motored in and it was a bit of a white knuckle ride .. We have a lifting keel same as Jim in Full Circle so we do tend to wind it up at low tide .. Both Dutch boats were pulled off .. No reports of injuries .. Just damaged PRIDE .. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Right now, little anecdotes like these take my mind off the problems I'm having.

Anyway, to fully understand my post you have to know 'what happened before'.

This incident was reported in The East Anglian Daily Times on Monday. The two yachts were not Dutch but were reported to be from Brittannia Sailing School. This is unfair on Brittannia as they were on charter to Cambridge University and no Brittannia staff were on board. Apparantly, one boat went the wrong side of the green buoy and the other went to try and rescue.
John White, Harbour Master at the Ferry, tells me today that the buoys are on the edge of the channel and it advisable to proceed around 20 metres away from the buoys. John knows more about this bar than any other living person!
The EADT also reported 5m waves on the bar, which is rediculously overstated.
Well done FFSC who saved the day.

I saw that report and thought it unlikely that local Sailing School yachts "would be unaware of the shallowness of the water, and its reputation for catching out even experienced sailors"

All the same I would have thought that anyone chartering a boat on the East Coast should make sure that they had up to date information about the local rivers, especially the Deben and Ore ?

I should think Britannia were not happy when they heard.
