I`ve been looking for a flat screen tv with built in dvd player for the boat for ages ( just for SWMBO of course) and found the SEVIC 15 or 17 for just £299 or £324. This works on 240 or 12volt so is ideal for boats.
Out of interest our local caravan shop wanted £449.00 for the 15" !!.
Thought this might be of interest to those who find a bit of electrically powered entertainment during the dark winters nights invaluable.

SMG of Plymouth (01752 24 10 00) are now importing the very impressive AVTEX W151D (£499.95) - a six-in-one entertainment centre - which is a 15" multi standard TV and also DVD audio and video player, FM/AM radio, smart card reader and has VGA socket for use as a PC monitor, or could be used as a chart plotter repeater.

The box comes with all necessary leads and a variety of radio antennae. It is suitable for mains and 12v. It will connect to On-digital in UK and could be configured for a number of other things. (EG I plugged a dongle holding some music into its USB port and it played the recording very well through the good quality, in-built speakers.) It seems well engineered and the daylight viewing qualities are good

I only got mine yesterday, so the above report is a bit sketchy except to say that the tv pictures was fine and all the other fuctions were up and running in less than 15 mins.

The import companmy does not sell direct, but they seem quite approachable and would give you any info re dealers over the phoone, or by email from sales@smgeurope.com

Worth looking for one that includes a freeview decoder if you want (watchable!) TV reception as well. Alternatively you could use a stand alone freeview receiver if space permits- multiple remote control syndrome though!
I use a stand alone Sony decoder and reception is excellent and I've only found one port round the south coast that didn't (at the time) have a digital signal.

Who supplies the Sevic 15 and 17?
Just what I want. It's true laptops are very power hungry and more expensive.
And you don't necessarily want your laptop plotter used all night by clumsy crew
for entertainment either.
The Avtex sounds great but also a bit pricy, although it is multi standard, but then there's nothing to watch in the EU is there.
In fact the more I use my trusty IBook at the chart table, the more I think I'd be better off with a TV/DVD in the saloon and a marine chartplotter in the cockpit.

A better telephone number is 01752 24 10 10.

SMG also have a super, illustrated free catalogue which gives the retail prices of a huge quantity of electronic apparatus currently on the market.

shame it is not multi standard (just europe) for the TV, and spec does not make it clear whether the DVD is multi-region as well (absolutely essential)

One supplier is A J Electronics in Edgware. or search for "Sevic TV"

It is a Multi DVD and also has a PAL NTSC SECAM tuner. I`m no expert but this seems to have a great spec for only £299.00

Thnx Chris, both Sevic models are interesting. Google leads one to IncarDVD
The 15in has controls on the front, but I suspect the 17in has a better screen, or at least the pixel count for the 15in is not specified. Certainly keep the younger crew entertained when weather bound or bored!! Are 2watt speakers enough?
S'pose they must be! Very tempted to take one out with me in May.

Have a look at marine AV, they have lots of flatscreens and dvd players. However like SMG they are distributors to the industry so you would need to find a dealer - i'll dig out some prices if anyone is interested.

Saturday last, there was for sale in Woolworths on the Isle or wight a 20 Inch flat screen TV for £240 plus a DVD player (small) £27.00 Seems like good value?

flat screens (especially if you want to view DVDs) are all about pixel count - and this is where the money is - Look in a shop that sells cheap flat screen TVs and there wont be a mention of how good the pixel count is.

I have seen some 42" screens advertised as HD ready whose pixel count was less than that I would use on my 17" PC display.
