I still do it on my modern Cummins. I believe it helps to reduce bore glazing. Even if it doesn't it's not a problem just to be on the safe side.

I don't think lorries do it; I ve never read the procedure in the hand book

I agree with that Peter, maybe it does'nt help after an engine
is "run in", but it also can't do any harm with a marine
engine , cos whereas a lorry is probly up and down the gears
thereby altering the revs, us mobo types set off on a long
sea passage set the throttles at a fixed setting and maybe
six hours later arrive at our destination with the same
throttle setting, your doing no harm Peter
