Hi all

I am trying to sort out the fittings for the canopy i will be making soon. One thing i am not sure on is which size of Turn buttons and Lift the dots i need. I will be using both fittings.

Should i wait until i have made it then measure the thickness of the over laps/joints ?

Thanks

Wayne

You can get different length pins on both the deck pins and on the fabric mounting plates.

There's a nice description of the difference here..

Mainly, the long pin versions of the fabric socket are if you're using a really heavy duty canvas.. I've always found the standard ones okay even through a few layers.

As to the deck mounted pins... If you want to plug two pieces of fabric (maybe the sprayhood and the cockpit tent) into one pin then go for the double height deck mount.

Also - Remember to put the fabric socket/plate into the fabric in the correct orientation. They're called "Lift the dot" for a reason.. You lift at the 'dot' mark. So this 'dot' must always be towards the edge you'd try to lift the fabric from :)

I will be using Top Gun so not really thick/heavy weight canvas. I will just take a rough guess as to what i will need and get an amount of each 6mm and 8mm in both Turn buttons and Lift the dot. I will have a good idea once i have fully designed it. And i could even get these bits once i have made it so not to over order.

Shocking to price of the tool kit. I see they do hire it out which i may do if.

When I did my sprayhood I just used a hole punch for the central hole, and for the 'bend over tags' I just marked the slots with a ball point pen and then used an old sharpened small screwdriver and punched slots - had no problem with the fit when fitting the 'lift the dot' . I only used the smaller 6mm size and they were perfectly ok even through 3 layers of acrylic.

Use a fine tipped gas soldering iron to make the holes after marking the points. Easy and fast with the benefit of a non fray-able hole.
