Has anyone any experience of the boats coming out of Turkish shipyards?

The Assos shipyard is currently offering what is to all intents and purposes a fully spec'ed Fairline Squadron 52 at greatly reduced prices.

http://www.nolimitscharters.com/yachts for sale/assos.html

Do Fairline now build some models in Turkey?

The yard claims to use a mahogany lamimated fibre glass hull, that is superior to Fairline.

All comments welcome

Gludy discovers Turkish Fairline copyshop!

Fairline do not build in Turkey. This "Assos" boat seems to be a copycat Sq52. The hull is wood, so it is a different boat from the Sq52, but seems to be a copycat stylingwise.

The write up on the website says "you might notice similarity to Sq52". Yes you would, becuase the photos ARE a Sq52, they are fairline brochure shots! The moulding aft of the saloon windows has been photoshopped in this picture - on the real Sq 52 the aft edge of the superstructure here is dead vertical, whereas on this Assos it is slanted forward like the Sq58

How much £££ is it gludy? And what engines?

Would be interested to see what Fline make of this.

I wonder what 'll happen when Turkey enters the EU. Will their govenrment stamp out blatant practices like this. Turkey is also famous for pirating other things such as software and music and videos. All practices that can't really go unnoticed not to mention the torture, treatment of women and general human rights abuses, but these issues don't have heavy weight corporate lobbyist behind them unlike, software, music/film and boat builders. (I am beginning to sound like a bunny hugger)

Could make an interesting boat comparison on MBY e.g. How many people died or had the liberty impinged during the building of this boat. Lowish score for kidderminster perhaps with a highish score for Turkey or should it be other way around ;-)

Can be arsed...

Re: Gludy discovers Turkish Fairline copyshop!

You are right they have actually used Fairline brochure shots not the shots of their boat - even includes the bag on the floor as per the Fairline brochure!

Engines are Cats with full guarantees as is all the other equipment - all the normal stuff fully guaranteed.

I was told they will copy any boat and this is , I think, the reason they use wood - they build it as a wooden boat and then put fibreglass over the wood - no mould!

Cost is about £330,000 + Vat for a copy Squadron 52 with all the extras including aircon, etc, etc So it about £200,00 + Vat cheaper!

I really think its cheeky breaching Fairline's copyright by using their photo's!!!

Let alone copying the boat.

Mind you, it seems you can have a Princess, or a Sealine - anything you want!

I was told on the phone today that "practically all Fairline production is now based in Turkey".

Gludy\'s search is over?

Wonder if they copied the "two cabins only" policy that fairline applied when speccing the 52, which is why it sold so few and got killed off early......

who told you that turkey stuff on the phone?

Presumably they will not only copy any decent boat, but fit jets as well? No reasob why not. In which case, your prayers are answered, right? Will you be ordering a jet powered Princess 60 clone or something?

Re: Gludy\'s search is over?

Yep they copied the 2 cabin I think but the boat is a mix of f52 and f55.

A chap who claimed to be their rep phoned me from Eire this morning and gave me the tripe.

I don't think I will be ordering anything from this lot.

Wish I could order a boat that was not built around washing machine, did not vent the kitchen fumes into the helm (not outside) through a little bit of carbon and was designed with jets plus a number of design features from Fairline, Princess and Sealine.

Re: Gludy\'s search is over?

A Leopard 23 clone - wel judging by the bigger boat they are now building in the yard that is much bigger than 23 m and the price for the Squadron 52 look alike - I reckon a Leopard clone would be about £1.8m complete with all the extras!

I found myself day dreaming after reading your post of a Leopard 23n clone WITH jets out in the Med - just zipping past another Leopard I know .....If I could just get the snap shot of the chap's face on the Leopard ........ fun to day dream!

Re: Gludy\'s search is over?

Well, if you spot a market, and suspect that others may want the same, it's time to start manufacturing?

I wonder what it would cost to distill the wisdom of this forum and create a new series of boats that had many or most of the features that posters here think important. Design, manufacture, distribute etc. Could make an interesting thread.

Still, when the first of the line went on sale, it would be marked down for having the wrong type of wood in the cabin /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Re: Gludy discovers Turkish Fairline copyshop!

In my recent searching for a new boat, on some sites I had to give my email to view a boat - the 52 foot super yacht was one of them.

I received an email with details and then was telephoned this morning by a chap from:-
Fastnet International Yacht Brokerage Ltd.
Kinsale Co.
Cork
Republic of Ireland

He told me that the boat was built in Turkey - it was a copy of the Fairline 52 foot, it was better quality and much cheaper because of the cheaper labour.

He then told me that even Fairline now built boats in Turkey then proceeded to tell me that in fact "most Fairlines are built in Turkey". I did not argue but did not believe him - all it did was lose any credibility he may have had in my eyes.

I am not arguing that the boats are not good value - I personally would not risk one but I would prefer not to be told a pile of rubbish. These days, I just retract from such situations without arguement - its easier.

In then inspecting the web site - the chap on the phone gave me the name and I did a google search - my other half noted that the same photos of the fairlines were used with it seems some confusion between the 51 and 55 foot. I suppose this way they can advertise the boat without ever having built it.

Re: Gludy discovers Turkish Fairline copyshop!

I am in Kinsale often and can confirm Fastnet, while long-established, is (in my subjective opinion) a tin pot operation. The statement about Fairlines built in Turkey is as Kim says complete tosh but it doesn't surprise me they said it.....
