Any opinions as to whether my wife and I should hire an outboard for the supplied dinghy on our 2-week charter in May and is there a higher than normal risk of it being stolen? Our charter will be out of Gocek and be restricted to leisurely sailing in that general area.

I did get some good advice from the forum on other sailing matters prior to booking, but can't recall asking for opinions about including outboard hire.

In a couple of weeks' charter out of Gocek a few years back we never parked up anywhere which wasn't an easy row ashore. Having said that, folks with outboards sometimes seemed to be making much lighter work of getting a line ashore in a crosswind than we did with swimming/rowing.
 
How much are they chraging for an outboard for the charter? Weigh that in the balance with the increased range from where you anchor and the easier business of taking a line ashore. As to security, I can't speak for Turkey but we always lock the outboard to the tender. In most case you should be able to take along a padlock of you own to lock together the 2 clamp handles, which, whilst it won't stop a determined thief, will perhaps make him go on to the next tender without a lock......
 
That's 130 quid for 2 weeks,you have to ask yourself whether you really feel it will be justified. I generally find in that area, when we anchor off we don't tend to use the dinghy at all as we eat on board .Most of the eating places have jetties beside them so you use them if you want to eat ashore.Re taking a line ashore,we generally just jump in and swim with it.
I reckon you could put £130 to better use over the fortnight,however that's only my opinion.

One way or t'other you are sure to enjoy it.!!
 
We didn't bother and didn't think for one moment that we needed one. I can't honestly see why you need one. To be honest we didn't even use the dinghy much at all. Most of the restaurants have pontoons anyway, and when we anchored and took a line ashore I swam. I think the trick is finding a sheltered anchorage and getting close enough to the shore that once the anchor is in, it's quick and easy to get the line ashore, (and that's just with two of us).

There are loads of great places to see around Gocek bay, and a bit further, as you're there for two weeks. You'll have a great time.
 
Thanks for your replies. The main reason for considering hiring an outboard is that it would be easier on my wife!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Really looking forward to sailing in what will hopefully be warm, but not steaming hot, weather for a change. Also hoping for not too many midges in early May.
 
You won't get midges,but I assume that you refer to mossies,and you will get them..we had them last year at the end of April right through till June. so be prepared.As you are chartering I guess that the boat might not be equipped with screens so it would be prudent to take a mossie net along with you..buy from camping store. Better to have it .
 
We've always used mozzie repellent and we have a couple of little battery powered devices that you put in your cabin at night. We also took some citronella candles to have on in the cockpit, rather than putting a light on for the evening.

Quite right!! we have all these as well as mossie nets. And still occasionally get a bite!
