The heatshield on our Sabre 250 Turbocharger (a horrible rattly metal contraption) has finally broken off and cannot easily be refitted, due to bolts having sheered. I therefore want to replace it with one of these "Wire-On" jackets, I believe I've seen on other boats, probably made of Kevlar or some other asbestos substitute.

I've tried the company who supplied the turbo, but they've never heard of them and can't see why it should be shielded anyway! I am sure Sabre could supply at a price, but feel there must be other suppliers out there who supply them for lorries etc. probably at a fraction of the price.

We've run our engine for several days now without the heatshield and the engine compartment doesn't seem any hotter than usual. Do marine turbos always have a heatshield and if so what options are there?

Many thanks
Ian.

Don't have them on Volvo 41's but turbos are water cooled.

You could try the heat resistant rope that you can buy from places that deal with woodburners etc. It is essentially the same material but in a different format. I've used it on my heater outlet and I think on my previous boat on the turbo. It's cheap and easy to use.

there are two types of turbo, water cooled genrally volvo, CAT, yanmar or mercruiuser to name but a few use these! Your saber is not cooled, however it is possible to cover them you can do it yourelf with asbestos type rope of cloth or you can get one made. you could try contacting MANUFLEX who specialise in exhaust high risers for marine engines.
it is a wisw move to cover the turbo with something for safteys sake!!
We use the rope sock and sheet at work so if you have trouble finding some i can happily oblige.

A company down south can supply covers for turbos, exhausts etc. they are called demon tweaks. mostly supply stuff for cars but can supply any type of gauge etc for boats. the heat shields are grey and wrap around the turbo itself. I have used several on various cars and they work great. The turbos on boats are essentially the same type as cars.

Try them its worth a go.
