Turbo engines and oil changes

Umm, just learnt an interesting if expensive lesson. Road car is Alfa 156 JTD, a 5 cylinder 2.4 litre diesel that gives 150BHP. Several weeks ago it destroyed it's turbo, thanks said the Alfa dealer that'll be £ 590 VAT fitted. Car has done 42K miles roughly. Alfa said tough, not covered in the 3rd year of warranty.
Just spoken to Turbo Technics cos it's a Garrett Turbo, first thing he asked me was what are the service intervals, 12K miles said I, too long says he. He then said that 6K would be much better. I said any difference the fact its a diesel (cos they run cooler) no said he the amount of carbon in the oil means it should be more often not less. Another point made was that oil feed pipes should be cleaned after turbo failure and preferably replaced especially if they run near the exhaust.
Moral of story if your boat is turbo'd change then oil regularly!

Its the acids that are produced and hang about in the oil. The work vans have an oil change every 3000 miles. Not that expensive when you buy the stuff by the barrel and filters by the 100's.

It depends on how much oil is in your sump, the size and type of filters, and the type of running you do.
We use a few td100g Volvos at work with 200 hour service intervals also we oil sample at each service. We have found that at 200 hours the oil is still good but if we try to extend to 400 hours the oil is breaking down, so we stick with the recommended 200 hour interval.
ps the last thing we would do is buy filters from volvo, we us the local Fleet Factors.
Also the shut down proceedure is critical, we once stalled an engine during a full overload test, as the turbo ran down from full speed with no oil supply left it siezed solid.

Regular and frequent oil and filter changes are the best and cheapest way of increaseing the life of any engine particularly a turbo diesel.
We regularly ran agricultural engines ( similar to small marine engines ) to 10,000 hours equal to roughly 300,000 miles with no major overhauls or repairs , but oil and filter were changed every 100 hours no fail.
The startup and shutdown procedure for turbod engines is also vital and not always explained to new users ;-at startup let the engine idle for a short while to allow the oil to warm and circulate thoroughly, at shutdown again allow the engine to idle for a minute or two to allow the turbo to cool and slow down ( a sudden stop from high revs will leave the red hot turbo spinning at high speed with no lubrication.

I change my cars oil and oil filter every 2000KM's.
