Tug update

Well it has been a major job but what else can you expect for £5oo.oo
You wont believe it but I had to resheet most of the lower hull especially the stern area .At some point the stern quarter had loads of ballast dropped in the idea being to get the prop lower and stop the cavitation .The hull actually had holes in it and even a fracture of about 4"" under the engine .The reason it didn't sink was because of the build up of sludge which slowed the leaks down .
The ballast acted as a sponge and held the damp !!!! REMEMBER THIS !!!!
so all that area had to be recovered .
I used about three 15 kg reels of mig wire and Masses of gas .
I will do some more detailed stuff and put it on my web site
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/boats
Mind you the stuff that's already there will take a good bit of reading.
The tug is ready to go in but there's a ship in but tomorrow could be the day .
Must say it has been great fun ,I spent every day except three days over xmas working on it and loved every minuet .That might sound mad but this time of year I seem to suffer badly because of the lack of day light so as we're half way to spring my therapy has been the tug .
The worst and hardest work was grinding the hull ,upside down for hours and hours I can tell you there's no need for me to do my weight training .
The tug was called Reed Hawk but the name is attached to the yard and the pilots still use that call sign so a new name is required.Perhaps some one can think up a good one .
The Volvo is spot on and I believe the Parsons gearbox is as well but that's to be tried ,mind you Henry says it's ok so that's good enough for me . Henry is the man who look's after the yards equipment and has been very helpful with idea's about problems along the way .He has an aqua star 33 ( don't I know some posh people)
I cut up some old scrap and made hand rails to go all around the deck ,also welded a ladder on the stern as well which is a must have just in case some one goes in .
There now a little of the tug, as work on the tug is basically done for now I have started back on the garden which is good because now my divorce is sorted out re settlement ,the shed can be finished .
The shed is a proper shed 40 by 22 foot just right to put the other boat in plus lath mill and so on .Core by the summer I could have that finished as well !!.
The only down side to all this fun is I have not paid to much attention to making money but who cares .
Oh and if any one wants a run out to do a little fishing in the wash I could be persuaded with nice cup's of tea and mars bars.
I now will be looking for the next boat got to be steel and BIG maybe an ex trawler but above all free or cheap enough to warrant all the work needed

Re: Tug names

Mick thanks for update. Looks good, even looks a kind of planing hull? Couldn't get your website to work, just got a front page with massive text but no details

I have to admit steel I'm very attracted by steel for boats. Two tools - welder plus grinder - and you can do anything. No drilling holes and fixing screws, just turn the amps up and squirt molten metal at it. Fantastic. When is launch ceremony?

If it used to have ballast because of cavitation, will you have the same prob? I didn't think cavitation would be a prob for a slow boat (I assume 12 knots ish?) and with a prop doing 1250 rpm tops at full tilt. Maybe the problem was something else, like the prop just popping out of the water on waves?? Hard to guess becuase cannot see the stern of your boat in the pic.

Name suggestions. Hmmm. Dunno really. BarryD might sell you "MV3". A pun possibly, like "It's a steel". How about "Steely Dan", erm only you're called Mick, dang. Unless your ex was called Danielle, or now the divorce is sorted you could get a new girlfriend called Danielle, then it would be OK.

Re: Tug names

It has a tunnel like effect around the stern area which means the prop is only just under water .The g/b is 3 to one so not very fast .
I have changed the 4 bladed prop for a 3 which should be a lot better .
Original was 32x 10 if that, and needed lots more pitch .New one is 25x16 much better (we'll see).I'd say because of the constant and length I recon about 9 knots would be about the mark but with the original prop it can pull the socks off any thing.Weight is against it though being 26 foot long I'd say around 6 tons plus what I've added
By the way it's an ex army tug so if any one knows where I could get the year of manufacture it would be good stuff .Original engine was a Rolls-Royce petrol which Henry got out straight away .
The number tags are still inside the wheel house so dating could be straight forwards .
I'll check web site before I go off to bed and let you know if it's ok
Cheers

Re: web site

Yep it's fine the link to the site is slow to load .run your mouse over the bottom left hand corner of the page and you will go straight to the main page .
I had to self teach using Macromedia ,dreamweaver which by the way is very good and since doing that site I have learned alot more so a revamp to speed things up is needed.
Pictures say much more than words so there loads and loads of them
Cheers
