Hi Just overhauled a set of old Tiffittings winches (tuffnol), and was wondering if anyone knows a way of applying a finish.

The tops had a kind of deeply ingrained moss on them which I have cleaned off. Should I use varnish, or boot polish or something like this. I really have no Idea of how to make them look their best.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Nick

Boot polish is an interesting suggestion. Worth giving it a try I'd say. Nothing to loose.

Tufnol never seems to come up very well. But if you polish with progressive finer grades of wet and dry till its really smooth, then wet with oil and wipe offl leave to stand for a couple of days, you should end up with a clean looking winch with a nice woody finish, the oil will not mark ropes nor feel oily, did mine this way and dip every season. Good rubbing. Pampas.
