Just in the process of rebuilding the sterngear.....BUT.... what is the correct hose to specify for the short length between the stuffing box and the stern tube. I thought there was a special thick wall tubing for this application but I cant locate it. ( 50 or 51mm ID).
Help please . Thanks.

Good opportunity to consider replacing with a modern seal.

Do you mean those ones which fail every two years?
I have known "modern" ones fail because of lack of water supply, failure of a carbon disc, running hot because of excessive friction, failure due to air being trapped etc. The old stuffing box seems to last quite well with regular greasing and gives an early warning by dripping a bit more. At which point you just tighten up the nut.

It's even better if your stuffing box is mechanically attached to the stern tube. It is more complicated however, because if your engine is on flex mounts, you need a thrust bearing and flex couplings.

No, I mean a Volvo which does none of those thinbgs - or a Tides Marine, or a PSS, all of which are vastly superior to a "stuffing box" if you follow the instructions.

My stuffing box is directly screwed onto the stern tube. Maybe it's because my engine is only 14HP but I haven't got a thrust bearing and the flexible coupling is only one of the cheap plastic ones. The engine does need very accurate lining up. It's been running happily for the last 6 years.

stuffing box hose

recently ordered, and received next day from Silette Ltd. Very helpfull people...what impressed me was the fact that their hose was nearly 10mm thick, as opposed to the existing hose which although supposed to be the correct type , was only about 5mm thick. Feel a bit safer now
