Morning all.

We're off again, this time armed with lots of useful advice. No1 son is vandalising a vhs tape as we speak, the headsail is ready to go and we'll loosen the topping lift this time!

Fingers crossed, we might do a bit better this week /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi Novice 21.
How did it go?
You're obviously bringing No1 Son up in the way he should go.. reuse, recyle, waste nowt! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

looking forward to hearing the next instalment...
Have you considered keeping a diary? then writing a book? make a fortune and retire on the profits and spend all day every day afloat...
dream on! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Much better!

I bullied HWMBO into putting up both sails (he's easily scared!), we used the video tape tell-tales and remembered the topping lift. Altogether better, we had much more speed and progress was made (still within the Roach). Also managed to avoid hitting anyone, despite several people's best efforts!!

Next we need to find out what is wrong with the engine - suddenly you realise you have no steering, the engine is running but has slipped out of gear. If you put maximum revs on it goes clunk and is fine. Also mysteriously refuses to start every now and again, turn everything off and on again and it is fine... odd...

Overall great, lots achieved and lots to think about. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

sounds good!

Your engine sounds a bit like the interface between my computer and my printer... when in doubt, re-boot... However, I guess it's more of a problem with a boat engine, especially if you need it urgently.

Did No 1 son enjoy the outing? Not to mention seeing his handiwork put to good use... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Well, yes and no. He did say as we set off 'do we have to go sailing every weekend?' So I think the novelty is wearing off. He enjoyed destroying the tape, asked if we have any others he can take apart! Didn't show any interest in the actual sailing, when asked if he'd had fun at the end of the outing he said 'yes, the batteries on the psp lasted the whole time and I've eaten nearly all the toffee!'. I'd rather he was interested in sailing but at least he's not refusing to go yet...

Let me guess - he's approaching the age when any activity involving parents requires application of some kind of technology to maintain sanity on all sides! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Failing that, you'd better find a willing minder... or offer to tow him behind on water-skis! (only joking - probably better not suggest it to him in case he likes the idea...)

If he has a sibling, persuade the sibling to get keen and then maybe he'll want to be in competition... or maybe not.

What does he want to do with the other redundant tape??? simply dismantle it and strew it all over the house??? It'd probably make a good bird-scarer on the veggie plot... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Has he a best mate or girlfriend, who could be persuaded to come too - then your son could show off and be the expert in front of his friend. They suddenly become very keen when there is someone to impress!

That's a thought. I wonder if the side kick would like to come out sometime? I will enquire. We also have an older daughter who is as keen as mustard, the problem there is she has a Saturday job which is getting in the way...

You could also try giving him a specific role, with a hat with a name on it (2nd Mate?) and involve him in planning and executing his special role - eg pirate lookout watching for - oh, anything really. That way at least he'd not be able to play computer the whole time and might begin to be more aware of the total sailing experience.
Has he read Swallows and Amazons?
