My Black and Decker drill works fine, but the hand tightened chuck has stopped working. It has been used to remove antifoul and old adhesive for head linings etc.
Anybody got any idea of how to remove the chuck and replace?

No, but I've just bought a 13mm chucked variable speed mains hammer drill from Woolworths for £9.99 - I need to drill a 12mm hole and my proper drill only has a 10mm chuch - the tool hire people were charging £10.45 for a half day so even if I throw it overboard when I've done the job, I am still in pocket /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Been down this road.
You probably can't buy a chuck for less than a new drill.
B&D chucks tend to have smaller threads than most available chucks.
If there's no chuck key,(I think you said hand tightened) try a mole grip (or even a stilson) around the barrel and hit that to loosen the chuck on the thread.

Insert the chuck key and hit it with a light hammer in the direction the drill rotates to unscrew it.

the chuck key'll be your hand then ... just insert forefinger into the chuck, tighten up (one handed?) stick out your thumb and hit with a light hammer (what wattage? 50w enough or should I go for one of the 100w halogen ones?) /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

It all depends of course on the model. However I have just changed a B&D hand tightened chuck for a friend. (Fitted to a cordless drill) The chuck was locked by a splined, left handed screw in the centre. Once this was removed, I had to tighten a vice onto the freely rotating plastic outer to unscrew the chuck. (Standard clockwise thread). He got the new chuck from B&D. One of the chucks was stamped B&D, the other Jacobs. If you need B&D details, PM me & I will ask him.

Chucks don't stop working. it may be gummed up in which case I would suggest imersing the chuck with drill attached in to a container of strong solvent or paint thinners overnight. Wash it out if it comes unstuck and lubricate with oil or WD sparingly. If it is moving full travel but simply not gripping then there is not much you can do except tighten it more.

Black & Decker and De Walt spares are available on the following number 01 543 275048. Excellent service.

Sorry William_H, but the new plastic chucks do break - the locking rings just go round and round and round.

Thanks for your replies. Yes the hand tightened chuck just goes round and round. I will take it to pieces and replace hopefully with a key based chuck system from my collection of old Black and Decker drills
