True love - Trurkish man sails 16ft yacht from Turkey to Plymouth

What a horrible way to treat a visitor!

The Turks have always been very hospitable to Lady Z and myself whenever we've visited them!

Can we not do something to help him?

Did you enter Turkey illegally, I assume not. He is an illegal immigrant and is probably capable of applying for a passport and obtaining a visa to enter the country legally.

Legally schmeagally! What's the difference?! We're all people are we not? Human beings?

Attaching the label "illegal immigrant" is a very effective way of "othering" ie reducing the status of the "other" to something less than that of a regular human. I'm glad you didn't call him simply an "illegal", which some people do these days;, committing an offence against language as well as thought and basic humanity.

(gosh I didn't realise I had that thought until I expressed it)

I hope NOT as he is an illegal. He had no passport and he knew what he was doing.

Sorry but thats the way it is. What about ALL the other illegals? Should we help them as well?

But.... They intercepted him in the channel - What's to say he wasn't just on a sailing holiday, or that sort of thing?

I presume he's lost his boat too now?

I assume his boat is busy accruing marina charges which you and I will pay when the marina presents its bill to the UK Border Agency (having deducted it's own estimate of the value of the boat less broker fees).

Yes seems very unfair to me......they could have warned him off & told him he would be impounded if he entered the UK then I dare say he would have gone somewhere else & .....he must have passed through other Countries on route I wonder how they treated him?

What a miserable Country we have become when you consider all the immigrants we see on our streets many of whome I'm sure can't be legal :(

Good grief! The state of misery in the Uk is irrelevant, as are other immigrants who have not entered the country correctly. This man sailed into the UK waters with the intention (I assume) of landing in the UK. He was intercepted and and found incapable of entering the country using the normal procedures.

If I set sail without a passport and turn up in New York, America, it would be the same treatment - sorry mate, no entry allowed, go home.

As for a previous comments on humans and humanity, that is also irrelevant. I cant believe I am defending the UK Border civil servants!

About ten years ago, a friend of mine (Belgian) drove with another friend to a beach near Calais, and put their small two-person kayak in the sea. And then set out crossing the Channel in fine weather. Two hours in, it dawned on them that they forgot their identity cards (keeping stuff dry was an problem). But they carried on because 'we are in the EU and the Brits themselves have no ID cards anyway'. ... Not a good idea, they were picked up arriving at Dover, and spent the night in jail. The kayak was impounded, they got a stiff fine and were put on the Calais ferry...

+1 A very enterprising man - we need more- we have more than our fair share of the others.

They're lucky the French didn't fine them as well for going too far out to sea in a "beach engine" or whatever category kayaks come under. I'm told this is the reason that most "crossing the channel in a bathtub / pickup truck / inflatable shoes" attempts start from the English side - it would be illegal under French law to set out in them intending to go more than a mile or so.

Hard to believe, isn't it? Apparently sane and one might expect law abiding citizens decrying our legal obligation to reject illegal immigrants. Why is it that whenever someone is caught blatantly breaking the law there is a strident outburst of people saying let him off, he didn't do anything? Is the law optional? Since when?
Is the plan to just ditch the law and live in anarchy (that is, more than we do already)?

Nothing ever seems to be anyone's fault these days, there's always a wet excuse why they should be let off or not punished.

Of course this is a correct decision by the Immigration authorities. I'm not going to sat well done because it is just their job which we expect them to do properly Or at least, the law-abiding ones amongst us do.

It all happens in Plymouth!

Longer story later when it comes on line.................

This goes a long way in telling about British hospitality and the arrogance of the UKBA.
I cannot believe that a man going through such an ordeal is treated like a criminal.

I do condemn the immigration laws and the behavior of the British government who's members like Theresa May fight against Human Rights rather than supporting them. Britain is going a long way to become the 21st century Nazi state.

Sounds like a sex pest as well as an illegal. It's not as though the love of his life is standing tearful on Plymouth Hoe. The UKBA are doing their job, and long may they continue. As others have said, anyone here tried that trick in another foreign country would get exactly the same treatment.

Let's do like the Turks do and charge £10 (cash) for a visa for 90 days

I think that the Brits charge £60 for a Tourist VISA, making it only £10 would attract more tourists. I understand that several people going on a European Tour from the US, Japan and China are shocked when they learn that they have to pay more to visit Britain then the whole of Europe that offers a VISA for around £50 for the Shengen countries, therefore most just drop Britain from their route.

So what do you suggest should have been done?

Well for a starter get the RYA to sign off his yacht master practical !

Let's face it,if the dude got a shore it sounds like he'd be stalking this woman and be an even bigger pest ! Sending him home is probably the best thing in this case.

How the hell did he bump into a customers cutter in the first place, can't recall seeing one in ages !
