I am new to this game - just moving boat (Achilles 24) up from Mylor to Plymouth, where we will be on a fore and aft trot mooring. What arrangement do people usually make? At the bow we have a large cleat which we currently use for the strop but at the stern we only have 2 fairleads and the sheet cleats - i.e. no central cleat. Any experience/suggestions would be very welcome. Thanks.

if your trot is one of those under the tamar bridge, you'll have a fair bit of tide. you need to have the mooring line pretty central or you'll shear off to one side when the tide is from astern. also double-lash the helm, you don't want the rudder being pushed hard over.

generally you should have for a fifty foot trot (which I think is standard size)

two fore strops and two aft strops which including your boat should make up desired length, i.e. 50ft. Also a pick up line the length of your boat tying the strops together i.e. the fore strops to the aft strops when you are away from the mooring. This serves two purposes, one it makes it easier when returning to mooring to pick up fore and aft in one go, and to stop the trots from spreading out allowing the mooring bouys to hit the boats fore and aft of your mooring.

You will need a pick-up bouy and use floating rope as your pick up line to keep it away from propellors, the pick up line needs only be light say 8mm poly.

PM me if you need any more help I will be happy to oblidge. Worth calling the harbour master to determine exact lengh of trots.
