Does anyone have up to date information on Tropea marina. Am particularly interested in facilities, security etc and if they can easily handle visitors. Considering leaving a 13.5 m yacht there for about 3 weeks from the middle of April as we work it westwards through the Med.

We were in Tropea in early September last year but it was very busy with charter boats and we were fortunate to get a space. It is a clean marina but without much security where we were. We saw no evidence of crime or anti-social behaviour but it did seem to have quite a lot of teenagers on mopeds and scooters buzzing around it.
Sorry, not much help.

Was in Tropea some years ago . Marina was as described previously but I recal there was allso a yard there with lift out facilities with security a nd a large dog but they did not allow you to live on the boat .

Why dont you try Vibo Valentia run by Italian Canadian left my boat there - expat community too very good access to rail to and from Rome

Tropea is a great place, it is clean, modern and well run. Prices are reasonable for Italy, the town is very nice (tourist mecca). It has become a charter base and in high season, visiting yachts are usually told to leave each Friday (return monday). There are a couple of marinas at Vibo Valencia that might be more accomodating if you have no luck at Tropea. They seemed very secure and friendly (not always the case in Italy).

My advice is to clear Italy before June or be prepared for some big "water and power" charges!

Very quiet and pleasant when we were there for one night only, two years ago. No special security measures in view at that time but it didn't seem that any were necessary. Our visit was early in the season, when it was clear that many boats had been there all winter and had yet to be recommissioned. No sign that there were problems.

As in the previous post, Vibo Valentia is a very good choice, about 11 miles further east by water. Berthing costs when we were there about the same in both places but VV has better security and better shopping.

Further to my previous post, I see several people are recommending Vibo Valentia as an alternative.
We were there last July/August and it is a good marina. We were in Stella del Sud, which is run by Angela, an English speaking Canadian. I am pretty sure that you could 'negotiate' with Angie if you were thinking of 3 weeks. We found her to be very friendly and helpful.
It did appear that boats left unattended on berths were sometimes moved to a 'fore and aft' mooring and then back to the berth ready for the owner's return. I don't know if this was done with or without the owner's consent.
The railway station connects to Lamezia and is a 30 minute journey. IIRC at about 1.80 Euros each. It is about fifteen minutes walk from the marina.
It is a nice place but not as big or busy as Tropea and I also would recommend it.

Hi Terry we wintered in Tropea 07-08 for 7 months. Found the marina friendy and helpful. We did not have concerns re security, usually the barrier is down so vehicle access is controlled tho foot access is not usually restricted. Price was reasonable and shelter good.NE winds can cause a surge. We we well inside the marina. Long walk to the town and up 200 steps. I can give more info if u contact me.

surprised at number of fans of Vibo. Stella del Sud is excellent but we found the town a bit of a dump really (last summer) really struggled to find a decent place to eat out. All a bit down at heel ( Like a lot of S. Italy)

We spent 10 days in Stella del Sud in summer 2007 whilst waiting for a July /August lift out. Angela was very helpful and arranged a lift out by crane with a neighbouring small boatyard. I agree that the town of Vibo Marine is downtrodden. The main town, a taxi drive away may well be different but I found the time we spent at Vibo Marine very depressing. There are a few restaurants and there is a beach of sorts, but the town's pavements and buildings exhibit no signs of care or repair. It is Calabria.
Tropea marina and boatyard are at the bottom of a steep hill on which the town of Tropea stands. You can get a taxi up the hill or walk up the footpath. The town is bustling and pleasant, although a bit touristy. In September 2007. the marina was efficient, had good facilities- shop, laundry, showers and well fenced from the outside. The boatyard next door was very secure and had a new looking travel lift.
