ive read somewhere about a line to put on the boom when the airs are light, (not like this weekend) to hold it back and stop it flapping around with the swell, can some one please tell me how to make one and attatch said bit of string to the boom and boat.

That boom brake looks promising. I rigged a preventer for my little 18 foot Foxcub as they are excitable downwind. But sailing singlehanded it was all a bit much, swapping over the ends of the preventer when doing a controlled gybe, as well as everything else. I suppose if you only had to gybe every half hour or so it may be practical.

Yes I have never felt the need or value for a preventer. It should be fairly easy to sail a few more degrees off the wind to avert a gybe followed by a deliberate gybe but then perhaps that is the kind of sailing I do with frequent course changes in a relatively confined area.
