He could do something of ultra low taste and have a Chess board put into the table.....

I replaced three boring alloy instrument panels with burr walnut laminate.
Old fashioned 'Go an boil ya heads'
The laminate is 1mm thick stuck onto 9mm mdf this product has a plastic finish and requires no varnishing or polishing 'Maintenance Free'
10mm overall size is double your problem. I placed the laminate face down on a 9mm mdf board with double sided tape to stop any movement and then set a wood thicknesser to 13mm the 10mm board below protects the face on passing
through the thicknesser end product a 4mm panel all holes drilled before stops splinters.
As CCSCOTT 49 Knows what his talking about dress the edges the proper way.
If you do decide to pipe the edges try the contact below. I painted and sealed my edges and the back of the panels.
Burr Walnut Panels from WWW.EUROPASPARES.COM
122CM X 28CM £20:00
122CM X 51CM £33:00
Give your friendly woodworkshop a drink for the thicknessing and you will have proper maintenance free panels.
Edging matt from WWW.RUBBERTRIM.CO.UK
( cheaper than wilkes )

Good luck email me anytime
