My"For Volvo engineers" query on PBO only got two replies so apologies for repeating it but I'm sure there's some mechanical/hydraulic experts here.

We have got a scored piston rod - a bit too deep to polish out and going radially around the rod. Has anyone got any comments on our suggested remedy which would be to clean the blemish, apply Silver Solder and then polish the repair? Alternatives suggestions would also be appreciated.

We were going to de-chrome the rod and then re-chrome it in a backstreet den up in the Black Country. However, to our surprise we found that the rod is not chromed but is simply polished SS.

"Col" of these parts made us a generous offer but we found that the part involved was from the wrong model of leg. Thanks anyway Col.

So, what does the panel think????

I used to get mended, all sorts of dents and dings in gears, drive shafts and all sorts. No idea if silver solder will do it. But a good guy should be able to weld it up, then turn or grind it back to like new.

I'd have thought a really good SS tig welder should be able to weld it up, then dress it, with you to do a final polish. They'd need to do it a bit at a time, to avoid putting too much heat into the rod and damaging the seals.

Why not take it to a hydraulic specialist, as both the PBO replies suggested?

Thanks all.

Just heard that the "job's a good un".

Friend of a friend got the rod welded and polished back to where we needed to be.

I've also learned from a fellow forum member that this is a relatively common problem with DP-E's dated around the turn of the century. If that's so it shows Volvo in very poor light, with their policy of not supplying this part, separate from the whole ram assembly.
