Hi Everyone,
I am seeking some help in relation to a Trident warrior 40, 1997 that i am looking to buy, so the vessel has a brand new Beta Marine 50hp engine fitted, new sail Drive, new propeller, new bow thruster and new electronics, new lithium batters, recently copper coated and antifouled, my main concern is the water ingress from the windows and hatches, i was made aware of this, and can live with this, its just a case of replacing the windows and hatches, of what i am willing to do, at least 4-5 hatches leaking and 3-4 windows.

My big question is! prior to me requesting a survey, is this an easy fix, or could there be delamination happening, if i am being honest i have no clue of the fabrication or structural integrity of these boats, due to my work commitments, i haven't viewed the boat, but the owner i believe is being honest with the information he has communicated, and the broker has been very forthcoming with photos and videos, and pretty much answered every question i put forward,

Top side, looks to be fine, i know standard rigging will need replacing at some point, and i am more than happy to bear the cost of this, providing the boat is free of osmosis and is structurally sound, i intend to liveaboard and travel the oceans, i know most of you will say, wait for survey results, but i am pinning my hopes that someone has encountered the same issues and could possibly assist/help with some advice, the owner has valid reasons for the sale, and i couldn't resist putting ga cheeky offer in, that was actually excepted.

Locating the point at which water is getting in can be a pain in the arse and must be done before you can start sorting the damage. The first few photos show that the entry point is not at the window but is higher. This is where your surveyor earns his fee.

The last photo of the damaged shelf suggests the need for replacement. This is usually straightforward, but if you are not a ship's carpenter already, you soon will be.

The shelf and lining panel damage looks cosmetic and DIY fixable. But you (or your surveyor) need to establish the extent of any hidden damage and the cost to remedy if the wood is damaged beyond the veneer. If it really is every hatch and window then it could be significant. I would be especially interested in deck moisture readings and any signs of water in the deck core. And the condition of structural bulkheads.

Resealing hatches and windows is DIY. Replacing could rack up costs. Deck core repairs are more complicated, especially if balsa rather than foam. For the short term, insulating tape can be useful to stop leaks. Do not use silicone sealant! You are unlikely to get a meaningful estimate of costs unless you know what needs done.

If its any reassurance, I had several deck leaks around fittings but none of them caused any deck core problems. Reseating with butyl rubber sealant is my choice of bedding compound.

Hi
And thank you for you assistance, as you mentioned, trying to find the source of the leaks is going to be a problem, port and starboard side, both have leaks in the same location, or should I say water staining in the same area, and the broker seems to think its from the hatches above, he also mentioned the current owner is in Italy and very rearly get to the boat, and the previous owners, they neglected it the last year of ownership, hopefully the moisture readings will not bring unfavourable news, the broker mentioned, they havent identified any soft spots on the coach roof or anywhere else.

Hi
So I spoke to the broker today, no soft spots identified on the coach roof, couple of windows are cracked, and latches missing off others, as you mentioned, the surveyor should pick up and obviously carry meter readings, its a shame for the current owner, he lives in Italy and rearley gets to the boat, hence the issue, he has thrown alot of money at the boat, new engine and electronics, etc etc, and the previous owners before him, had the boat for 10 years and the last year neglected it.

All fixable. If its the right boat for you then go with it - there is much satisfaction and confidence knowing things are sorted either by you or the previous owner.

If the offer was subject to survey you may still have the opportunity to renegotiate if the survey finds more damage than expected. However the water damage is obvious and current leaks known before the offer so you may not get much luck with that. As indicated finding and solving leaks can be very time consuming and rebuilding and resealing windows and hatches expensive, particularly if you pay somebody to do the work. On a different matter have a close look at the engine/saildrive, be aware that there have been problems with the bell housings that connect the engine to the drive and confirm that it is to the latest specification.

You may find this useful saillifechannel.com/athena he also has a youtube channel. There is a lot in it that covers the construction of the deck. also this youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=QqUT7PB6vUU
They are both 38s but essentially the same boat, although I suspect the later boats like yours were better built. Be aware that many were not completed by the factory so fitout standards may vary.

Its probably ok, remember that the broker is working for the seller (and will not get paid until he sells the boat), use your surveyor well.

Hi, please may I ask if you decided to buy? Thank you

Thank you for your reply. I did read the thread, but obviously not completely as I missed where he decided not to buy.
I have seen an advert for one in Grenada.
I asked because I might be selling similar.

Hi, I didn't go through with the purchase, due to my work commitments in Africa, my time replacing widows or getting the work carried out and getting time to enjoy the boat, would of been a struggle on the work rotation i am on, also i want a turn key boat, not wanting a project that i couldn't supervise the works,
