I am having to replace my Tricolour Mastead/Anchor Aqua Signal mast head light and need to be able to control navigation or anchor light on separately. There only appears to be one cable at the mast head and I am wondering how it can be controlled via one cable. It doesn't help that the previous owner disconnected all masthead lights so I cannot just replace the unit at the top of the mast, I need to understnd how the wiring works.

Thanks

By "One cable", do you mean a single conductor, if so can't be done.
If it's a 3 core cable, connect one core to the Anchor light (+ve), the second core to the Nav light (+ve) and the third core (-ve) to both lights, connects the 2 +ve cores to the appropriate switches.

Thanks, yes it is a three core twin and earth flexible cable so guess it can be done using earth cable, I suspected this but just wanted to check. I need to do the same for a steaming/Deak light also so that will work for that to.

Thank for your quick reponse and help.

Thanks for the quick response.

If you have to replace any cable, swap it for the largest cross section wire you can fit in - less resistance / voltage drop over the length of the mast, sharing of the ear while both bulbs are illuminated (steaming / deck is quite possible) and lasts longer against corrosion.

Several years ago I had an intermittent leak which would form a small puddle outside the heads under the mast connections. As usual it wasn't obvious where it was coming from but when I checked inside the box under the mast I found water dripping out of the centre of the three core cable. Up to the steaming light/deck spot I go and find it letting in water and in a bad enough state to be replaced. When I put it all back together I put silicon sealant into the cable to seal it and have had no more drips from it.
