As you are aware - I classify myself as a sailyboaty type of person. I have a friend (just the one) who has a thing called a Grand Banks. He has invited Dear Heart & I away on it for a few days.
Question 1 - how does a Grand Banks rate amongst the learned colleagues of this flora?
and
Am I going to enjoy this and what will I do with the time I normally spend trimming the sails and strolling imperiously round checking out the cut of my jib.
and
Will this be a seminal, life changing experience in which case - too young to die, too old to change - do I politely refuse and offer the places to someone more appreciative?
regards
Undecided of Fleetwood.

Re: not a Tricky Decision

A Grand Banks (GB) is the motor boat of choice for the committed committee boater, and for the ex-sailor who feels themselves just that cut above. They're those trawler-style boats that look as though they'll get through anything, big saloon with windows, option to drive from inside or out on top, berths at each end below. Nice big wake, steady 15knots is fine. Inside is all sailor-approved wood, with wood floor, wood walls, wood furniture, wood bed and wooden duvets. Also it's nice steep stairs everywhere, and sit-up sofas, just right for awkward saily types who hate anything comfy. You'll love it.

A Grand Banks is a boat with style and panache. It is the other end of the scale from a lot of the jelly moulds that one sees around these days. If I had to be the critic I would observe that they will roll on a wet lawn so take your Quells with you.

You don\'t look well

Byron
You look like you should have taken your quells
Are you unwell, is this the projectile vomiting virus which I've heard about?
hope it clears up
regards
JS
As for the Grand Banks - Perhaps if it had a sail it wouldn't roll as much?

Re: staysail

oh gawd, you're obviously the right type. Yes, I beleieve the bigger ones do have an optional staysail thing, but only used when visiting saily types need to be kept away from the steering, engines, cooking, nav. and so on

Grand Banks = majestic old lady of the sea, nautical equivalent of P4 rover saloon, much better to be shaken to bits on some high speed planning boat, I'm a rag and stick type (also a newbie but kept it quiet to avoid being lambasted, so dont tell anyone) who bought a stink pot cos its a quicker and more reliable way of getting pub to pub in the solent.

Grand banks had a designer called Tony Flemming some years ago, he went on to design Flemming 50,53 and 55, not sure if he is still about, I met him once, jolly nice chap.

You'll love it and never spill your gin....

Re going over to the Dark Side

Grand Banks are built like the proverbial brick facility. Indestructible really - get your mate to ram a couple of yachts and you will see that it emerges virtually unscathed. However, it is unlikely you will like it's warm dry accommodation/helm position and no need to wear thermally lined space suits before setting to sea. Oh and you'll find that you get to places in a day it takes you a week to find.

One little home comfort is that most GB's have a mast of sorts, usually rigged to lift the dinghy aboard. If you feel too uncomfortable you can always go and play with that for a while.

Finally, be careful when you're on that boat as they cost a lot of money.

Re: The best laid plans

Don't worry about it - the forecast is likely to put paid to such plans - motor boats only work in reverse gear when the wind is >10kts! ;-)

Go for it, and let us know what it was like. I've not yet been on one, but am hiring one in Florida for Easter, so want full sp please. The rigging I gather from friends who have one, gets tangled, especially when used by chidren on holiday for climbing up swinging out on to splash land in the water, great game on the MBM Zeeland cruise last year

What seems like a hundred years ago I used to own one, loved it but realisticaly would/could never have anouther - why?.......lets just say that if your friend hints at a contribution towards fuel cost, you will insult him if you offer less than about £500; cos they don't half burn it up at any sort of speed.
But after Claymore the difference will be an eye opener which I think you and your good Lady will enjoy.

Re: You don\'t look well

I always look this way after reading this Forum.
The Grand Banks properly kitted out does have a steadying sail.

Re: Anyone for a sofa?

I blame the schools for Will's mix up. When I was a kid we got tort not to mix up "their" and "there" and lots of others. All fine, these are easily confused. But "imply" and "infer" are totally separate friggin words with different meanings and nothing in common except (I spose) they both begin with "i". The only reason people mix these up is that schools taught us NOT to mix em up. I mean, if the schools just kept quiet, no-one would even have thort of mixing them up in the first place. Like, we dont get mixed up between "shag" and "sofa" do we, even if they both begin with "s"?

All imho. You can imply whatever you want from the above
