I don't really want to fit carpet in the cabin of my Albin Vega. I do want something non-slip, and a bit warmer than bare grp. Has anyone fitted Treadmaster on the cabin sole? If so, would you recommend it?

If there are any drawbacks, or alternative suggestions, I would be very grateful to hear them.

We had Treadmaster on the companionway steps and it worked well as non-slip and also for putting hot saucepans on (to my surprise). However in my opinion it "bites" - quite sharp edges and I wouldn't fancy it on the sole. We like wood although it isn't exactly non-slip and we have also seen people using dhurris for a bit of warmth underfoot - at least in harbour.

Hi FergusM,

I thought about doing this some years ago as it seems a very good compromise between a non-slip finish and GRP. We have the 'diamond' patterned stuff on the comanionway steps etc, but as pragmatist says, it would be very comfortable to bare feet where you might be standing for any length of time.
In your situation, I'd go for the Treadmaster stuff that has a sort of 'pimple' pattern, as this is much kinder with very similar non-slip characteristics.

Cheers Jerry

We have used the commercial grade of Flotex with great success. We cut it to fit and glued it down with the recommended contact adhesive. It is 100% synthetic, 100% waterproof, reasonable soft underfoot, non-slip, very hard wearing and it looks good. We have had it down for 10 years and it still looks as good as new. The only problem at all has been the piece glued to the engine hatch which has broken away at the corners due to standing the hatch on edge when we lift it out.

There is a wide variety of normal floor coverings that are non slip and don't look "deckie" as an exterior deck covering would. They are meant to go in decorated wet areas in homes, commercial buildings and marine.

They range from raised pattern types such as the radial rubber coverings through vinyls etc with non slip additives which give sufficient edge to make them non slip. They are available in sheet and tile form and we specify them for bigger boats (and also did so for our own in the galley, foot of the companionway, sole immediately outside the bathroom and on the companionway steps - carpet elsewhere).

Any flooring specialist will be able to point you to them with samples. They are widely used on boats.

What is the finish like? Is it similar to Interdeck or is it more "lumpy"? Does it tend to retain water if used on an external surface? Would you use it on deck instead of Interdeck? It does look a very interesting product but appears to only available by mail order.
