Have successfully used Trainitalia to buy and reserve seats on trains between Vibo Valentia and Palermo and Rome to Vibo Valentia .
Useful if you are planning to link up to cheap flight operators such as Easyjet and Ryanair . Train from Rome to south 4 hours . Most ports on west cost a short taxi ride to mainline train stations

However Train to Palermo went on ferry across Messina Straight and although delayed was pretty cost effective overall

We took the train from Pisa to Piombino – all very exciting – especially trying to get a family of four and bags on board in the limited station time stops.
Getting off at the other end, one of the doors wouldn’t open and there was nearly a riot as people scrambled over each other and our pile of baggage to get out. All apart of the adventure!
Bloody hot too!

Well if you really want a thrill try asking a taxi driver to get you from the main line station in Palermo to the airport in 20 minutes. - no defined lanes on motorway - you choose your own - including hard shoulder 200 km per hr , 6 inches from car / lorry in front blowing horn and flashing to get past etc , etc ,etc . We did it but never again !!!!!
